Is this a muscle knot or something else?!
Question: Is this a muscle knot or something else.?
I have this strange round lump in my back.. My husband says it feels like a "knot" in the muscle tissue but when he tried to massage it out it hurt alot and despite his effort, it wouldn't go away.. My thought is that it might be a lipoma or a cyst.. its solid and fixed and is tender.. I haven't injured myself lately.. for several days now I keep getting this sharp pain from the area and then an odd warmth from the same spot.. I have a doctors appointment soon and I can get it looked at then.. Anyway your opinion please on muscle, lipoma, cyst or maybe something else.? I know its not a disc issue..Health Question & Answer

im a remedial massage therapist so i will give you as advice as possible with the info you have supplied..
Firstly the best way to find out if it is a muscle knot is to apply a heat pack to the area wait for 5 mins and if the pain releases some what then yes there is a very good chance it is a knot, if the pain doesnt ease then you should leave the area alone and wait to see what your doctor says when he/she has a look..
If it is a knot you will need to get your husband to massage the area (not roughly) just more of a relaxing massage, this will help warm the muscle up and make it more pliable and less painfull.. Once he has warmed it up (the area will go pink/red when it is warmed up enough), he needs to get his thumbs and push on the area directly on the spot this may hurt a bit and if you use a pain scale ie a number out of 10, 1 being nothing and 10 being extremely painfull, dont let the pain go above 7 or 8, you need to take deep breathes in so that your muscles relax, when you notice that the pain is going away a bit tell him to press harder, dont use the pressure for anymore then 10mins after that you will have to stop and leave it alone for 5 days.. You will feel some bruising but that is just your muscles this can last 12 - 48 hours.. Good luck i hope this helps..
P..S if you have high/low blood pressure, Diabetes, Heart conditions or a recent stroke DO NOT do ANY of the above see a doctor immediatly if pain is persistent..Health Question & Answer
