More than likely, you have a compressed or degenerated disc which surrounds the nerves in your spine.. Once the nerves can be jiggled a little through such degradation of their coating, they send a shooting pain from your lower back through your leg.. (through the sciatic nerve)
At 52, my last disc is almost non existant from just age............I also have three discs that are ruptured from auto and motorcycle accidents.. Once in a while my back hurts like crazy, but exersize seems to help keep it at bay..
If it persists, go to your Doctor to be positive of what it is, and ask about "Decompression" techniques first rather than surgical procedures.. You'll be better off using anything but the surgeons knife in most cases!
