If it's genuinely a cold, it just has to run it's course, about a week.. And yes, it can make your ears hurt..
As mentioned, stay warm, drink extra fluids and eat healthy -- vitamins will help build your defenses.. Get plenty of sleep too..
But I would encourage you to re-think going to the doctor.. The other cold symptoms will just mostly be a nuisance, but if you have an ear infection you could end up with real trouble.. A blocked eustachian tube will throw off your balance.. Fluid build up behind the ear drum could lead to a worse infection (and I think it could lead to a perforated ear drum but I'm not 100% sure about that)..
The doctor can at least give you antibiotics for the ear infection..

drink alot of water
and also dont drink cold drink
