Question: Does my foot need to be operated on (x-ray included).?
Over the weekend my friends and I were jumping off a pier into the ocean.. I jumped in a shallow area and broke my foot in 3 places..
I went to the emergency room, got x-rays, and the doctors and specialists at the emergency room said I would need surgery..
My uncle, who is an anesthesiologist, also said I would need surgery.. A few other people in the medical field that I know also agreed that I would need surgery..
After scheduling an appointment with a reputable foot specialist, he determined I would not need surgery.. He has a good reputation because he performed surgery on Governor Corzine of NJ..
The doctor wrapped my foot in a compression wrap, gave me a removable "boot" cast, and sent me on my way.. He said I could put weight on my foot in about 4 days, and I will be fine in about a month..
This came as a shock to us because of how many different people said I WOULD need surgery, and because of the severity of the break..
Can someone look at the x-ray and tell me if I do need surgery.?
My mom is having another doctor take a second look at the x-rays to get another professional opinion..

Answers:
The one that concerns me the most is the second metatarsal.. The fracture is not aligned and that could cause problems down the line.. The third metatarsal is somewhat of a guess that could go either way as the displacement is not that large.. If it were me I would want the procedure to stabilize the bones.. You don't state if the doctor that saw you did any manipulation of the foot to bring the bones into alignment before wrapping them.. If that was done it is possible that they are now aligned but even so walking on them even in a walking boot is somewhat of a surprise.. Get to see a podiatrist and have them take a look at the films and follow their advice.. The faster the bones are stabilized the quicker you will be up and walking around without any problems..Health Question & Answer

Wow, it looks like you need pins to re-align the bones.. your best bet......GET ANOTHER OPINION.. You uncle is a medical doctor and I have to agree with him.. I don't read x-rays well, but this is so easy to see.. Those are nasty breaks.. Please, see someone who cares and will take the time to do something for you.. Keep off the foot, (duh) sometimes I amaze myself with my dumb answers.. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon.. Hope you have some pain meds, with breaks like that, although an anti-inflammatory will help with the swelling, it won't give you the relief you must need from those breaks.. Feel better..
