my finger became infected and the nail came off.

Answers:

Hate to tell you this, but it might not. I broke my toe in college 15 years ago and basically damaged the part that grows the nail, and now I have a toe with no nail. I don't know about an infection but I suppose it's possible that if it was bad enough it was permanently damaged.
