My mom had a surgery last Friday; what kinds of liquid foods can I prepare for her when she comes back?!

Question: My mom had a surgery last Friday; what kinds of liquid foods can I prepare for her when she comes back.?
She was rushed to the emergency room last Friday where she was diagnosed with Uterine fibroids, so they had to do a Hysterectomy. The nurses tell me that she will most likely be allowed to return home on Monday, and I want to be ready for when she comes back.

In the hospital they're giving her light and liquid meals mainly, such as strawberry jello-o, lemon ice cream, and chicken soup. I'm not the best cook out there, but I'll do my best to make the best chicken soup for her so she's comfortable.

What other (easy to make preferably) liquid foods can I prepare for her.? She's going to be disabled for approximately a month or two, so I want to be ready. I'm doing grocery shopping in an hour or so.

Thanks!Health Question & Answer

These are questions should ask her doctor; I am sure they will give you a list outlining what her dietary needs are; in the hospital they were putting her on a clear liquid diet; to transition back to whole foods, they may suggest doing it slowly, going from clear liquids to soft foods- **** When you have fasted for a period of time, you have to reintroduce foods slowly, so you will not get blocked up or have digestion problems. Depending on how her body reacts to fiber such as salads, I am sure they will outline it for you-

In the mean depending on what her dietary outline will be: clear liquids; tea, juices like apple, cranberry, jello
soft foods: dropped egg on toast, oatmeal, pastas, puddings, etc - then most likely whole foods in small quantity; gingerale is always a good thing to have on hand.

Great chicken soup for the not so skilled [like me] here is what I do- it is simple and it tastes good! by some boneless chicken thighs; simmer in a pot of water, add a teaspoon or two of 'better than boullion' boullion - it is excellent - add a bay leaf if you've got it - Then on the side, chop up some veggies; onions, celery, carrots, potato - I now nuke the celery, carrots, sautee the onions, and just put the potato in while the chicken is cooking - about 20 minutes; then as carrots and celery are tender, add them and the onions to the batch - and there you have, chicken soup; good, wholesome and delicious.
Health Question & Answer

she is only getting liquid foods in the hospital until her bowel starts up, it goes to sleep during surgery and it takes a while for it to wake back up. Once it does, she can eat whatever she wants to eat. So while you will want to keep her diet light, you don't have to keep it liquid. They won't discharge her from the hospital until they are sure her bowel is in working order.Health Question & Answer

She should be able to eat most mild things...don't be making her any 5 alarm chili or such, but most foods should be ok. I am sure she will also tell you what she feels like having, she may have not much appetite to start anyway, so a variety of soups and such would probably be good...provided she actually likes soup!
