Oxycontin is a long acting medication. The name itself denotes this. The OXY stands for oxycodone and the CONTIN stands for continuous. Oxycodone is a strong opiate pain reliever. Opiates are derivatives (natural, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic) of opium. Oxycontin is meant to last approximately 12 hours. This is probably the reason that you have not felt it. Oxycontin is NOT available in 5mg tablets, they start at 10mg. Oxycodone is available in 5mg and this is probably what you took. Oxycodone is a faster acting and shorter duration (does not last as long) medication than the Oxycontin. Oxycodone is available in much higher doses than 5mg. if you still have pain in a half hour it may be advisable to take the other half. you should not take another unless the pain is excrutiating. oxycotin is highly addictive and can be harder to quit than heroin, so don't take them frequently or you may get addicted. also the fda has pulled oxy off the shelves so it is illegal to posses them, so be careful who you tell about them.Health Question & Answer
