Question: Pain medications....i need help.?
I have RSD and was prescribed oxy 80mg 3x daily and they are costing me a fortune, and they help when the next dose has to take place. i have a appt with my doctor in the morning. any suggestions that i can make that may cost less and or have genericsHealth Question & Answer

Posters who point out that Oxycontin is not available as a generis hit the nail on the head. The price difference between oxycodone and oxycontin is tremendous. I don't know hether any other continuous release narcotics (codeine contin, MS contin) have mede their way to generics yet. Otherwise the longest acting narcotic available in generic format would be hydrocodone, but you couldn't match the dosage you're taking without consuming an enourmous amout of acetaminophen with which it's compounded. Methadone may well be the way to go, much cheaper, generic and relatively long-acting.

If there's any way you could get it covered, and manufacturers do on occasion provide drugs and hardware to patients who can't afford them
a morphine pump would be an ideal solution.Health Question & Answer

Another alternative would be methadone. It might be cheaper. You can check it out with the pharmacy before your next MD appt. There use to be generic Oxycontin on the market, but the makers of Oxycontin sued. They said there patent on it hadn't expired and the generic Oxy was infringing on their profits. As someone who has been on this drug for 8 years, I too have spent a fortune on this drug. Really unhappy when generic Oxy pulled from market. Not sure when it will return, but someday it will be on market again.Health Question & Answer

Is it Oxycontin or oxycodone you have.? Basically, Oxycontin is a brand name of time-released oxycodone, so ask if you can have the oxycodone instead. Alternatively, you could try the hydrocodone 10/325 as long as you don't take more than 12 per day as it contains acetominaphen. (thats the 325) and the safe limit for that is 4000mg per day.
You may find that these work for you. They're cheaper and they don't cause depression as much as the oxy.
Good luck. All painkillers suck, and they can all lead to addiction and crappy side-effects, but being a chronic pain sufferer myself, I know that sometimes you need them.
I'm about to quit mine and have a spinal cord stimulator implanted instead as my tolerance just keeps going up and I'm tired of being a zombie.
Good luck againHealth Question & Answer

I would print off a free drug card on internet and some of them will save you a lot.I did when I didn't have insurance and It saved me over half of what it would really cost. You can also look up pharmacy's that accept it and it will show you the price with that card, and sometimes your med. is cheaper than it shows on here, but its pretty close.Just Google free drug cards, there not insurance, but there free and will save you alot of money. If I were you I would print from more than 1 company, too take with you to pharmacy and see which 1 saves the most.Health Question & Answer

Please be careful... I took that for an ankle injury, (nerve damage and RSD) and ended up addicted and so depressed I almost killed myself. Luckily I stopped taking them.. I know you need it for pain, just please be careful.. and I know when I had to get them a lot, we had a friendly pharmacist that would lower the prices for me. I'd talk to your doctor, he would know if there is a generic or something cheaper that would help.Health Question & Answer

Just ask him for morphine pills. That is much cheaper.Health Question & Answer
