What you are doing is called the valsalva maneuver. By hold your breath and pushing you are causing increase abdominal pressure which causes your blood pressure to rise very high. This is the pressure you feel inside your head. Is it bad for you brain cells themselves.? ....well I would say no the brain cells themselves should not be damaged by this increased pressure unless something else is occurring. But raising your blood pressure like that is not the best for your blood vessels in your body and brain. I am assuming you are young and do not already have high blood pressure. If you have an unknown problems with your vessels this valsalva maneuver could cause a problem. (I would list them here but it could just cause you to worry needlessly)

It is best to use the bathroom as soon as you feel the need to go. When you wait to go, the body continues to remove water from your stool making it more difficult to go. Secondly you should avoid forcing the process. A bowel movement ideally does not take much effort because you should be relaxing and letting the muscle open, not forcing it against a closed muscle. I know it is embarrassing, but if you continue to have problems you should speak to your doctor.

Good luck!Health Question & Answer

No your brain won't lose brain cells. What you are doing is pushing the wrong way. You need to push from your bottom and not your head or face. You are likely to strain muscles in your neck if you keep forcing the feces like that. also if you're having this much trouble with you bowels you need to consider using a laxative (like ex-lax or senakot). That will soften them up and you won't have to work so hard to get your poop out. Health Question & Answer

You're not losing braincells - that's just something muscle strain does to the head (I think it's the pituary gland being overworked but don't quote me on that!)Health Question & Answer
