What causes severe leg muscle cramps during sleep?!

Question: What causes severe leg muscle cramps during sleep.?
It only happens when I am sleeping. I get woke up by a very extreme pain in the bottom half of my leg (calf muscle). It is really tight and I only feel a little relief when me or my husband rub it. It feels really hard like there's a knot in my leg.
This time when it happened, I also woke up with a very bad headache. Any one else had the same symptoms.?
thanks!Health Question & Answer

That's usually lack of potassium. Eat more bananas and oranges. Drink OJ. Get your potassium back up. If you exercise a lot, drink Gatorade or one of those sports drinks. If you still have cramping, you might need a medication at night. First, try drinking some tonic water before bed. It tastes nasty but it has quinine in it and that helps the cramps. They also sell a product called Leg Cramps. Yes, that's the name! LOL If nothing works, see the doctor.Health Question & Answer

that happens to me occasionally, and i dont know what causes them, but ive gotten them enough that ive discovered what stops them.
when you feel the cramp just starting up, its the simplest thing for me, at least. but somehow i find it hard to describe. you just have to move your ankle and pull your foot up...[see.? that makes no sense...] like when a ballerina when shes dancing on her toes, with the top of her foot parallel with her shin, the opposite of that. pull your foot up as far as you can and it stretches out the calf muscle and relieves all the tension, leaving you with only a fraction of the pain.

seriously, it works.
if you dont get anything i said, message me and ill take another shot at explaining it. =]Health Question & Answer

a lack of calcium or strain from over use could be the causes.Health Question & Answer
