Please, the first answer about the osteoarthritis is incorrect! What are you going through is the disease process. It is important if you are not on a medication for your RA is to speak with your MD (preferably a Rheumatologist) about being put on something such as Humira, Embrel, Remicade, Methotrexate, etc. to help with the disease. It is very important to be on a drug such as I mentioned to reduce the possibility to cause more joint damage.

I am on Humira and it has been a wonder drug for me. I have been on a few other meds for RA and Humira has been the best.

I wish you the very best. Good luck and feel better.Health Question & Answer

I would agree with the first answer about the osteoarthritis as well and that does make sense. But maybe you should be keeping a journal through out the day and be sure to write down everything you did through the day. Then at night, go back over it and see if you are possibly over-doing it in the day time , like lifting little things that you wouldn't think would hurt you but that could possibly add up to lifting way more then you should be. I have also heard that caffeine and nicotine also make rheumatoid arthritis worse and even tho I do both myself....its not helping our bodies at all. (I am hopefully going to get my first appointment with a Rheumatologist either next week or the week after to find out what is going on with me too)

Another thing to remember is that this type of arthritis is an auto-immune disease...so maybe you should take another look at any supplements/vitamins that you might be taking and making sure that NONE of them say that they are immune boosting supplements. One of the meds you should be on, like Humira or Enbrel is an immune system minimizer....making sure that your immune system is only working at the lowest level it can, so that its not attacking your joints as bad as it would if you were off it. If you are taking something that helps to boost it again, then it very well could be attacking you more at night, because the vitamin has completely dissolved and is finally working on your body. Same goes with food...maybe you are eating pomegranates everyday.? (In an example only) That's one of the fruits that is an anti-oxidant and helps the immune system to work properly..so it s a good idea to look at all the food you are eating too. You do need to call your Dr and make an appt, so that you can report the night time pain to them. If its in your legs, then maybe you have developed Restless Leg Syndrome, which usually goes hand in hand with these sort of diseases. It might be too that its time to adjust your meds to a higher level. They tend to build up in your body and you will eventually have to 'up' your meds on a semi-regular basis. I hope all this helps and get well soon!Health Question & Answer

The reason that your rheumatoid arthritis is so bad at night is because you may also be dealing with osteoarthritis which can be more problematic during the night (an example only but I know of people who have both conditions).

I would recommend putting in a call to your rheumatologist today through their after hours line to see if he/she is on call to let them know about the problem with your pain meds.Health Question & Answer
