Canadians: What do you think of your healthcare system?!

Question: Canadians: What do you think of your healthcare system.?
Do you think Canada overall has a good healthcare system.? Do you think it's better than in the US.?

I've heard things about how great it is that everyone is covered and there is much better preventive care than in the US. But I've also heard a lot about long surgery waiting lists and a shortage of specialists.

What do you think.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I think there are trade-offs for anything, and you have to decide which ones you are willing to make.

I am happy with our system, there are always things that could be better, but overall it is pretty good. I have a good family doctor, at a good clinic, and there is a good hospital in our town. It doesn't cost me anything (no co-pay either) if I need to use them.

I had an emergency where I needed to see a specialist and my doctor made a phone call, and I was at the University hospital seeing the professor of the department three hours later. Is that fast enough.?

On another occasion I had to see a specialist for a chronic problem that had been going on for years, I was able to get in to see the specialist in 5 weeks. That was fine, there was no rush.

Probably the first big difference is that people are seen in priority, if you are really sick you get seen first, otherwise you have to wait your turn, there is no line jumping, and some people don't like that.

Second, your family doctors are supposed to look after most stuff. Your kids see them, not a pediatrician for every sniffle. Pediatricians are specialists who treat serious illness, and kids in hospital, they don't waste their time seeing kids for simple stuff. Same with gynecologists and cardiologists. Your family doctor is quite capable of checking your blood pressure, why would you take up the time of a highly trained and very valuable professional for that.?

Third, people don't go bankrupt in this country because of outrageous hospital bills. Nobody quibbles about whether an illness is covered. You can't be refused coverage because of a pre-existing condition. You don't lose your coverage when you change jobs. I have a card that looks like a drivers license, I can show up at the door of any hospital in the country and they will treat me.

Finally, I think the proof is in the pudding, we have lower infant mortality rates, longer life expectancy, better outcomes on things like diabetes, dialysis, cancer and other diseases. We have 100% coverage of our citizens, and it costs less than your system.

I don't mind if sometimes I have to wait my turn.Health Question & Answer
