Please call an addictions treatment center in your local area. Pain killers can be very dangerous to get off of 'cold turkey' and you should be followed CLOSELY by someone who understands what you are going through.

Even though you want to get off of the pain killers now, if you start feeling very bad, I would advise you to take one of your regular pain pills.

You need to get help for what you want to do. It is admirable that you want to do this and I wholeheartedly support your decision, but your doctor should have told you what to expect and that you needed more help than just stopping the substance.

I cannot speak to you about the clonodine as it relates to coming off of your pain killers.

Please get expert addictions advise and treatment at once!

God Bless!

Health Question & Answer

Clonodine is an anti-hypertensive. It's used to lower the blood pressure. Opiate withdrawals can cause the blood pressure to be elevated in some individuals, and the clonodine will help keep your blood pressure low. It may make you sleepy, but I think that if you CAN sleep, that's one of the best ways to get thru WDs. You don't state what type of "pain pill" you're trying to kick. Some are much stronger than others, and can be harder to kick. If you're on an especially high dosage, or taking one of the stronger opiates, withdrawals can actually cause seizures and heart issues. Depending on your daily intake, it may be best to try a quick taper instead of cold turkey.

Health Question & Answer

Clonidine doesn't help with much. For some people it works great. For a lot of people it only takes care of part of the withdrawal symptoms.

The part of the brain that is hyperactive during withdrawals is calmed by Clonidine. That's what it does. It is actually a medication for high-blood pressure. So when you start it, do it slowly (start with 0.1mg the first day and slowly bring it up, otherwise you may get dramatic hypotension (low blood pressure)).

Generic advice may only go so far. It all depends on what painkillers you were using, how long you were using them for, what dosage etc. This is why it would be better if you talk to an addiction specialist.

Remember that whatever you go through, a withdrawal from opiate or opioid painkillers will NOT kill you. It may hurt a lot but it is not fatal. (Alcohol and tranquilizer withdrawal may be, but not narcotics)Health Question & Answer

It's supposed to help you detox from the pain medications! Call someone close to you, call a detox hotline, you shouldn't go through this alone, it's scary and you need someone to help get you through this so you don't relapse! Health Question & Answer

just take what is prescribed and dont mix it with alcohol.the main use for this medication is to treat high blood pressure but is some times used for opioid detoxification. hes just trying to wing you off the pain medication without going cold turkey. Health Question & Answer
