Question: Does my needing 10 or more hours sleep per nite mean I am lazier or healthier than most YA members.? .?
Somebody else on yahoo asked "how long do you sleep each night". Of over 45 YA answers I find I gave highest coz I seem to need 10 or more hours in bed on avrage nitely.My flatmate only needs 7 per nite and sez Im just extreemly lazy. Is he right.? I am 17 and my job means I have to work till 1AM most nites doing nasty work.When I get home exausted I stay in my bed most days till after midday as feel so tired. Is there sumthing medically wrong with me needing so much sleep & should I force myself get up earlier even if feel very tired.? Health Question & Answer

People are all different as to how much sleep they need. There is also a distinction between "sleeping" 10 or more hours per night and lying in bed 10 or more hours per night.

But it is really a question of how restfully you sleep as well as how long you sleep. The other point you need to be aware of is whether you suffer from "sleep apnoea". That means if you stop breathing at all while you are asleep, either through snoring or just through your breathing irregularly and then when you eventually awaken you feel extremely tired. Suggest you ask your flatmate to have a listen. If he does report your breathing is stopping occasionally, or that you are snoring a lot then you just may have a medical problem and may need to see your GP to be referred to a sleep clinic.

Otherwise don't think you have a problem, and even if you are a bit lazy, so are we all at times - even me although I work shifts and normally only have 4-6 hours in my bed day times, but then we are all different..Health Question & Answer

The requirement varies from person to person but always remember that sleeping 1hour before the mid night is equivalent to two hours of sleeping after midnight.That is why there is an old saying as

6-8 hours is the average sleep time for most people and adequate for the human body. Are you eating a healthy balanced diet.? Is your overall health good.? Try going to bed a little earlier on the nights your not working and set your alarm so you will have 8 hours sleep.
