Please help: I feel tired, yet I have troule sleeping..I just do things until I can no longer go, only then can I go to sleep. This has just recently started for the last few weeks, and maybe its just stress from starting my junior year of college. I don't know what to do..When I feel tired I play online poker or watch movies until I absolutely cannot keep an eye open. I cannot just go to bed though like a normal person lately even knowing I have to get up early. Oh Dear you poor thing!

Here are a few tips which helped my brother:

Take a cup of hot chocolate to bed with you and read a good book, ideally fiction, for half an hour before attempting sleep.

When you lie down, resist the urge to move and change position as much as possible, which will help to lower your heart rate and lessen the oxygen in your muscles helping you to relax.

When you become frustrated at not getting to sleep, resist the urge to take deep breaths and sigh, keep your breathing shallow and regular. Again, lessening the oxygen in your system will help you relax.

When you are attempting to sleep, avoid at all costs thinking of 'real' things, ie; what you've done that day, friends, what you are doing tomorrow. Instead, choose an abstract thought or image to focus on, for example a sci-fi space battle or a walk into a dark cave, something that will allow your mind to freely wander without being constrained by barriers of conscious fact.

If you are careful to stick to these rules and follow it through you'll surely find going to bed becomes a pleasurable experience quite quickly as you get used to it. But you must do it all, don't just pick the bits you like.

Good luck, God bless you.Health Question & Answer

I think to help yourself sleep quickly without taking pills, you should just go lie on your bed, forget about worries, don't think about the stress you have gone through. Just try to calm yourself down and free your mind that will help a lot and just listen to cool music not blasting type. Doing this should help. Am recommending this for you because I have done it before.Health Question & Answer

exercise vigourously.Health Question & Answer

1. Exercise, but long before you go to bed.
2. Do not watch TV or use a computer the hour before you go to sleep.
3. Avoid caffeine and excess sugar
4. Eat whole foods that are more likely to provide you with the nutrients you need.
5. Melatonin may help, but if your lifestyle (diet, activity or lack thereof) undermines you desire to sleep, no amount will actually "solve" your problem long term.
6. Get to know your body. It is different from everybody else's, has different sensitivities, and different tendencies. Keep a journal that allows you to see a trend in how you feel over-all. For example, "Today I ate....., I walked/ran/didn't exercise at all......I tried...........I got a massage..........tonight/this week I feel_____.
I know it seems like a lot, but I work with a physician and I see a lot of people battle with this problem for a really long time. They pour crap loads of money and time trying things that either don't work, or work but make them feel crappy. Take the time to know your body, because it's unique and special, and it will be worth it.
