Something very Good For Migraines?!

Question: Something very Good For Migraines.?
I need something very good for migraines. My grandmother gets them often and she gets very sick when she gets them. She feels nauseated and she starts vomiting, she also said that it felt like her head was about to explode. Please give me something that will work besides BC's, Tylenol, and Advil.Health Question & Answer

I swear I have nothing to do with this company. I have heard that this product works, I haven't tried it myself. There are many prescription things available, also caffeine can work (exedrin migraine has caffeine in it) but obviously you need to be careful with an older person and blood pressure, etc.

The sinusbuster migraine formula isn't too expensive and if you read the way the product was invented it deals with migraines.

Good luck--but above all you probably should have her see a doctor to be sure there is nothing else going on.

Take care.Health Question & Answer

First thing she should do is find out what is causing them. You don't say how old your Grandmother is, which would make a difference in what the causes are. Let me tell you what was wrong with my wife when she started getting them. The first time was due to birth control pills, she changed brands and the headaches went away. Your Grandma wouldn't be doing that. The second one however may be worth having her checked out for. My wife's hormone levels were to low. She had them checked when she had a pap smear. Medicines were prescribed and the hormone levels rose and no more migraines. The third time is when she decided to give up drinking Coca Cola. Her headaches were terrible because of the caffeine withdrawal. I bought her a can of Coke and she drank it and the headache disappeared. She then went off of it a little bit at a time. Your Grandmothers symptoms were the same as my wife's when her hormones were low. You can try this on your Grandmother the next time she feels one coming on. Take your thumb and index finger and start squeezing in the web area between her thumb and index finger of one of her hands to see if there is a sore spot that will make her twitch when you squeeze. Believe me you'll find one either on one hand or the other or on both. If it hurts keep squeezing like down and up until the soreness starts to disappear. If she starts to feel nauseated, tell her to lay three fingers, index, middle and ring on top of her arm with the ring finger at the wrist bone, Where her index finger is resting, go exactly below it on the underside of the arm, take her thumb and put pressure between the two bones or exactly in the middle. Keep applying the pressure until the nausea feeling goes away. Excedrin may help better with the pain, but she should try to find out what the cause is, so she doesn't have to take those pain medications which all have a large number of side effects. Tylenol tears up your liver, advil plays havoc with the kidneys, and even excedrin is habit forming. I wish for your Grandmother the very best and hopes she see's a Doctor to have some tests run and a big pat on the back for you young lady for caring so much for your Grandmother. Good luck.Health Question & Answer

There are two kinds of medications fpr migrain depending on ythe severity of the attack
1) Drugs
2) Non drugs

Migraine-specific abortive medications usually are necessary for moderate to severe migraine headaches. The abortive medications for moderate or severe migraine headaches are different than OTC analgesics. Instead of relieving pain, they abort headaches by counteracting the cause of the headache, dilation of the temporal arteries. In fact, they cause narrowing of the arteries. Examples of migraine-specific abortive medications are the triptans and ergot preparations.

Therapy that does not involve medications can provide symptomatic and preventative therapy. Using ice, biofeedback, and relaxation techniques may be helpful at stopping an attack once it has started.
If possible, sleep is the best medicine.
Preventing migraine takes motivation for the patient to make some life changes. Patients are educated as to triggering factors that can be avoided. These include smoking cessation, avoiding certain foods especially those high in tyramine (sharp cheeses) or those containing sulphites (wines) or nitrates (nuts, pressed meats).
Generally, leading a healthy life style with good nutrition, adequate water intake, sufficient sleep and exercise may be useful. Acupuncture has been suggested to be a useful non-medication therapy.Health Question & Answer
