Cutting for release...help?!

Question: Cutting for release...help.?
I have PCOS and i get depressed really easily. When i'm really depressed I cut for a release. Not to get attention, i have covered it up for years. I dont do it to kill myself either, It just makes me feel better. Its getting worse. Everytime I get into an argument with my bf, or get upset over what he does I go for cutting to feel better. It is leaving ugly scars, and I dont have anyone to talk to about it. I want to stop, but its so hard, I dont live near my family, and when my bf gets mad at me I hvae no one to talk to...No one who cares. I get to the point where i hate life, but i dont want to die. My emotions just overwhelm me to the point that i cant even feel the pain of the cut. My bf made me promis to tell him when I do it, but the other night he said he was getting sick of it.... Can anyone tell me how to stop, or atleast tell me that im not the only one who doesnt cut for attention or to kill myself.?Health Question & Answer

you're not the only one. i cut myself for YEARS - sometimes using a surgical scalpel. i had a lot of issues and went through a lot of crap growing up, and i had a lot of pain inside that i didn't know what to do with....so i cut.

i can't tell you how to stop. because every method anyone ever gave me didn't really work. the reason i stopped is because i learned how to love myself. and i finally realized that cutting does not solve my problems or even help me, it's just a temporary release that leaves me with permanent, ugly scars.

even though i realized this, i still "relapse" and cut from time to time. nowhere near as frequent or as severe though. these days when i get those urges though, i just make myself very busy. sometimes i just start cleaning my house - i'll scrub the **** out of the bathtub, and that works out some of my aggression. or i'll just take off and going for a brisk walk. doing something that requires physical energy can help take your mind off it, and doing something like that gets your endorphins pumping so you feel better.

i hope that you eventually realize that you are beautiful and that your life will get better. trust me, i believed the opposite for so long...but now i know better. someday things will get better, trust me. <3Health Question & Answer

My husband has a friend that does the same thing. The best thing is to seek help from a therapist. This gives you someone to talk to that will not judge you. Trust me I've seen one in the past & it helps.

YOU NEED MENTAL HELP! Cutting yourself for any reason isn't normal!Health Question & Answer

I knew alot of peopel who have had this problem. You need professional help. You need to see a counselor, and possibly get on medication to level out your moods. Even the minor cutting can lead to serious problems. You can say the cuts aren't deep, but the can get infected and the scars will be with you for the rest of your life.

Start by getting rid of whatever you use to cut yourself. It may sound crazy, but lock up all the scissors, razors or whatever in a box with a combination lock. It won't solve the problem, but if you have to make mroe of an effort to get to the items you need to hurt yourself- maybe you'll stop and think.

It sounds like you also need to get out and have some sort of life without the boyfriend in it. You need other friends besides him. I'm not saying to lose him, but if he is your entire world, that isn't a good thing. And a freind doesn't need to be nearby to listen.

But there shoudl be community resources to use as well. Most cities have some sort of crisis/counseling hotline set-up. When you feel the urge, try calling them to see if just talking to someone/anyone helps. They are trained to help calm you down and get to the route of the problem.

But you need a counselor who is well trained and experienced in self mutilation. It's a phsychiatric condition that is quite common, but can be treated if you really want to stop.Health Question & Answer

there are counselors/therapists who can help, but you've got to take the first step and ask.

maybe the self mutilators anonymous site can help. they're a 12-step group of people who know what you're going through because they once went through it themselves, or are still going through it.

When I used to do it, it wasn't for attention either. People do it for several reasons - you do not need to feel ashamed. Cutting is a coping mechanism that sometimes works temporarily, but not in the long run. There are issues you are going through that deserve more attention. Cutting is like trying to sweep your feelings under the rug. After a while, you're going to have to deal with those feelings before they explode on you. Don't worry about stopping - because the behavior isn't the problem. It is a symptom. Try to deal with what's going on first. I suggest finding a professional to talk to. Friends, your boyfriend or the internet won't be able to help you, because most people do not understand how to deal with the problem and have a difficult time not judging. The ultimatum set by your boyfriend isn't helping because it just makes you feel worse about yourself and probably makes you want to cut MORE. So don't be ashamed. This does not make you crazy. It's just a way you found to ease your pain.

I wish you all the best. And please try to find somebody in your area who can really help you develop new ways of dealing with feelings.Health Question & Answer
