I need a chiropractor to answer this one.?!

Question: I need a chiropractor to answer this one..?
first of all.. i have very bad posture. i always slouch, and my spine is nearly straight, not curved like it should be. i think it is because i always sleep on my stomach (ive heard that sleeping on your back is better). but, i cant fall asleep on my back. ive tried so many times and after hours i just end up turning on to my stomach and falling right to sleep. how can i learn to sleep on my back.?Health Question & Answer

I'm not a chiropractor, but I've got some experience with your example.

I too have bad posture, and now being middle-aged, also can have a bad slouch. It's taken quite a bit to learn to stand and sit straight, but my body won't stay that way because the body's muscles are trained to slouch, so standing straight tenses the muscles.

The way you sleep is a learned behavior. You've trained yourself and your mind to sleep on your stomach. I find that I prefer starting to sleep on my left side, but can sleep on my back also, because I retrained myself to. It's much more difficult for me to sleep on my stomach, because then my face is all squished against the bed.

So you've got to just keep at it, keep trying to sleep on your back.
You might try it during naps, so you don't have to try to sleep hours thru the night. That way, if you can take a nap from your back, your body and mind begin to learn to expect it, that it's all right to sleep on your back.

There also might be posture problems with you sleeping on your back. there are many kinds of curved pillows or shaped foam pads which can help your posture while sleeping on your back that you might try. There's one that is only a pillow which fits around your neck, to keep your head straight. Otherwise, there are some which give your back a little more curvature than normal, which might help your body to relax better for sleep.Health Question & Answer

The notion that sleeping on your stomach is an old wives tale...in fact, for some people, it's the appropriate solution to their back problem.

First, slouching is a habit. Failure to sit up right without sloucing does not indicate abnormal pathology. It's simply a behavior that must be retrained with practice and persistence.

Next, the "degree" of curves in the spine varies from individual to individual and, at this time, the scientific literature failes to demonstrate any consistent association between increased or decreased lordosis of the spine and pain.

If you are not having any pain, I see no reason to change your sleeping habits. Health Question & Answer

i am not a chiropractor, but i dont think it will hurt you to sleep on your stomach. i always have. besides, when you slouch it is supposed be bad for your health because it can cause you to have back problems later for it being all twisted and crooked. so, i guess its a good thing you sleep on your back. it (i guess) helps to do that because it keeps you from being hunched all the time. i dont think a chiropractor would help much because it is not really a problem.

either way, i hope you have a great day!!!

My chiropractor says to never sleep on the stomach. The back or side is best, and if you sleep on your side, a pillow between your knees is recommended. I too have a straight spine...mostly up in my neck. I started seeing a NUCCA chiropractor and have had amazing results. I highly recommend checking it out.Health Question & Answer
