Unfortantly when a Doctor prescribes pain killers for genuine pain such as you have experienced they nver tell you that when you cease the medication you will experience withdrawls.

You are not addicted, unless you actually crave them, but if you take them because you want to prevent the ill health that stopping causes then you are not an addict. But your BODY is addicted.

The only person who can safely help you is your Doctor.
He/she can prescribe medication that will relieve the withdrawl symptoms after he/she decides the best way for you to stop. Usually gradually.

You can not screw up with getting this sort of help for medication that was prescribed for pain and now your body misses it when it's gone.

But do something now, not later as it will be so much harder the longer you wait.

Well , since you never said what you are taking, impossible to answer. And how can a person Crave a pain-pill.?

A person once addicted to opiates PHYSICALLY requires them. You cannot crave something that when you do not have it legitimately makes you sick, soreness, muscles aches, pain, vomiting and sweating. This is physical dependence, you might however crave a Big Mac.Health Question & Answer

You are afraid that without pain killers pills, you will again suffer from pain problems. You know it well that these pills are causing so many side effects. Even your kidney and other organs can be affected.

When you tried to quit before and got sick, you were most likely suffering from withdrawals. Withdrawal from opiates can cause physical symptoms in addition to the mental cravings. Your body becomes physically dependent on the drug to feel "normal". The chemical in the pills attach themselves to the opiate receptors in your brain. When the pills wear off, these same receptors are now empty, causing the "sickness" you describe.

I don't know what dosage you're taking, but have you tried weaning or cutting your dose down bit by bit.? Depending on your dosage, you may want to cut down a bit, even breaking the pills in half. Try to take the least amount you can function on. One bit of good news, the withdrawals from most pain pills only lasts about a week to 10 days. It's less for some people.

Edit: Unless you're taking a large number of pills daily, I don't recommend using substitute meds, even if prescribed by your doctor. Yes, the doctor can prescribe something to ease the withdrawals (suboxone), it can be much more addicting than a few vicodin or percocets. You're trading one addiction for another one. If you do decide to see your doctor, you may want to ask for a few tranquilizers, as you will suffer a few sleepless nights when you detox. Doctor may also prescribe clonodine for blood pressure. Opiate withdrawals often causes a spike in blood pressure, and the clonodine will lower the bp. You may also need something for Restless Leg Syndrome. Soaking in a hot bath during your detox days can be very comforting.

I am going through the same thing. Due to constant back and shoulder pain I have been on oxycodone or hydrocodone for about 9 months. I know I am now in trouble because I was addicted for a couple years before I got pregnant. I went 9 months without any pain meds and life was so much better! But I have got myself back to where I started with this addiction! I do know the hell! I to am terrified! It is a constant struggle, it comes with so much depression and anxiety. I feel like I have totally lost myself and don't know who I am anymore. I have a baby that needs me and I am falling apart!............I don't know what to tell you because I have yet to know what to do myself. I couldn't go through the hell of withdrawal again! I did find a website that looked promising (http://www.1800nodrugs.com/)
You could also tell your doctor. You really have to swallow your pride, but doesn't these meds have you doing that anyway.? I know they do me. You have to try to get your life back! I wish you luck and know that you are not alone!Health Question & Answer
