How painful depends on how badly broken it is and where the break is.
Push-up injuries: sprained tendons, muscle strains, stress/hairline fractures are more common than an obvious break, but if you do a push-up wrong, you can break both bones right at the wrist.

I broke my wrist and it didn't hurt one bit. (because I went into shock) when I went to the ER and they set it in place it hurt, and when they went in to put in plates and screws, then it really started hurting.

Depends on the break. There are many bones in the wrist. Fell on ice and I broke one bone in my wrist in January of 2007. The emergency room doctor wasn't sure if it was broken. Put a brace on it. A few days after an expert looked at the x-ray the doctor called to tell me it was broken. Got a plaster cast. Yes, it was painful but I've had worse pain. Sleeping with the cast was very difficult.
