I get them really bad too. I'm a runner and over the years my coaches have taught me some ways of how to take care of them. For me, they don't heal until the season is well over, but there are things you can do to help them. Everyday I try to do the following things:

1) ice ice ice for about 20-30 minutes.
2) massage them. even though it's incredibly painful, it breaks up the scar tissue. so it's good for you, trust me.
3) have your coach tape your lower legs with med tape before practice with a shin-splints specific method. or, if you don't train with a coach, look up some good techniques online and try doing it by yourself. doing so provides more stability and kind of "holds together" your shins.
4) make sure you have good shoes. go to an athletic shoe store that can take time and see what your needs are.

I hope this helps you. I know how you feel! =/Health Question & Answer

The shoes you wear make all the difference. I am a marathon runner, and there is a specific shoe that I have to wear because I am a heavy person that if I don't use them I get shin splints bad. However with these shoes, I can run a marathon without getting them. The running shoes I use are Saccony Hurricane 8s. However that probably wont work for tennis or other types of sports. Stretching and stengthening your calf muscles also helps.
