Recent studies say, No! While it is true that most of us in these hectic times have difficulty falling asleep, recently numerous studies have shown that the flickering lights from the television, in fact, even the glow of the seemingly innocuous diodes in an alarm clock or on your phone charger, can stimulate your brain enough to keep it from reaching the deeper levels of sleep needed for your body to fully rest.

While TV definitely helps some people to sleep -- the noise is comforting, especially for those who can't sleep when it's too quiet--it also is thought that the variations in sound levels and sudden sharp or loud noises--gun shots, dramatic crescendos, car crashes, etc., can startle you just enough to bring you out of those deep sleep waves we all need! Often, white noise machines or those with the sounds of surf, or rushing wind, as well as tapes or cds made for sleep are suggested. It's a hard habit to break, especially for teens! A study quoted in CNN discusses the fact that children become dependent on TV like a security blanket, so it is like "trying to fall asleep without a pillow."

Experts suggest total darkness, melatonin, which your body produces naturally to enable you to follow normal circadian rhythms, for waking and sleeping, and various other sleep aids, but YES, they have shown in various studies that leaving the television on disturbs your sleep. They have also shown that that lack of deep sleep prevents your body from healing, rejuvenating and restoring itself. Disturbed sleep can cause many serious ailments, depression, memory loss, increased pain (in Yahoo today, I believe), weight gain, heart trouble, and more. Try to wean yourself off of it, or set your TV to shut off on a timer...if you fall asleep in half an hour, set it to go off some time after that, when you're sure you won't wake up and have to start again.Health Question & Answer
