Any paramedics/EMTs here?!

Question: Any paramedics/EMTs here.?
I'm 17, taking Medical Transcription right now but looking into going to the Paramedic Academy in 2009 or 2010 in New Westminster, BC.

What is paramedicine like.? Stressful, fun, exciting, scary, emotionally difficult, etc.?

What kind of personality make a good paramedic/emergency medical responder.? I'm a melancholy phlegmatic, calm in stressful situations, can work well with my hands, I have a quick memory and can apply my medical and first aid knowledge to real life situations, I have a medium strong leadership mentality but not over-choleric---meaning I can let others be the leader without getting competitive. I can see, touch, smell, taste blood without getting faint in the slightest, I can lift an at least 150 lb person alone, have a strong back, can look at gory things (although I've never seen death in real life!)

Do I have a good base to be an EMT.?

About the saves, how long did it take you to get used to seeing blood splatter, and really gory things happen.? Or, do you just look past it towards the problem and help as best you can without letting your mind in the way.? Do you go for councelling ever.?

Thanks for all your help!Health Question & Answer

I think you have a strong base to go on. I am an EMT and would love to have a partner like you. About the question of getting used to blood and all that gory stuff...i find it hard to focus on a "disgusting" factor when another life hangs in the balance....only afterwards do i think about it and even then it isn't that bad seeing as that it already happened. there are specific people personality types who are good at this job-here is what i've found,
They exercise frequently, appear to have been empowered by thier parents and past.
The gory details are usually covered in training and not really good to write about- desensitisation tech is used.
They will want tobe the best they can be -without being a 'silverback'-(a team player),many "silverbacks" end up redundant or dismissed.
The candidate would be excellent at saying things to calm and re-assure any pt, even if they felt the pt was not going to make it.

you 'sound' ideal, keep at it!Health Question & Answer
