Do you think people should have access to their own medical records via the internet?!

Question: Do you think people should have access to their own medical records via the internet.?
As opposed to having to pay to see them after asking permission and then being allotted a time and place to view them under supervision and paying for copies of details you require. I would like to know what other people think. I am on a pilot scheme to have access to mine and can access them from anywhere in the world, and share fully up to date record with treating medic/health practitioners as required. I don't use it much but for some with a long term or life threatening condition I think it would be most helpful. but what do you think and why.?Health Question & Answer

Assuming that it's secure, it seems like a good idea.

However (being that this is my profession), I will warn that there are going to be problems. No security is fool proof, so we're going to see these systems broken time and time again. Medical records of celebs, politicians are going to end up posted on web sites.

also, people are going to be careless. I know from experience that someone without computer skills will go into a public library and bring up their medical records... only to forget to logout. The person behind them will easily be able to get those records.

Or, an employer that monitors Internet traffic will have access to any employee's records, if accessed from work. Most people don't realize that their employer can get their banking information, for example, if they access their bank from work!

Lastly, with this level of access to records, doctors are going to "leave off" certain information. Doctors will then develop a second set of books or simply forget important information.Health Question & Answer

negative, having internet access to your health records is a HUGE HIPPA violation in the making. HIPPA is the organization responsible for patient confidentiality and I could never see them going along with this. Sure it would be nice and with the advent of paperless charting taking hold all over the nation, everything is on the computer now but that still doesn't mean you should be able to access the information anytime from anywhere.Health Question & Answer

No 'cause people can steal your identity easier, it's meant to be confidential like only for you and those loads of people these day who steal informaion from other

yes they should, especially if you move around alot, or change doctors. that way you dont have to try to remember what medications youve taken, or what youre allergic to. it is important for a doctor to treat you and know your medical history. to be honest with you, if i had to find my medical history on my own, i wouldnt be able to do it, because its too easy to forget what doctors youve been to, or who they are. australia has medical bracelets that can be worn on a patients wrist that has the persons medical history, so that if you were in an accident, the emergency team would be able to know how to treat you. i was impressed by that. you would think that the u.s., the richest country and most tech advanced would have something like that.Health Question & Answer
