As i said this hasn't happened.

But what kind of things should you consider when you think someone has broken a bone.?

What is the first thing you should do etc.?Health Question & Answer

This is a very difficult question to give a short response to, as you don't say what may be broken. I apologise for the lengthy and what may seem complicated reply. But the first action you should take is call for help - phone for an ambulance.

If it is the leg leave the patient where they are unless they, and more importantly, you are in danger - you don't want to become a casualty too.. A good First Aider always looks for danger as their priority.

If it is anywhere in their spine, under no circumstances should you try to move anyone unless you have special training. Move them carelessly and they could be paralysed for life. With a head injury always consider the spine to be damaged too.

Moving a patient with a broken bone may complicate the injury, the sharp end of the bone may break the skin or internal organs or blood vessels and then you have an even worse situation to cope with.

If the injury is to the arm or collar bone support the arm and make the patient as comfortable as possible. If it is possible lay the patient down then treat for shock - raise the legs and keep them warm (if a broken leg is suspected leave the injured leg alone but raise the 'good' leg.

If you are that keen to help why not get First Aid Training with the St. John Ambulance or Red Cross. They will teach you how to cope with most injuries in a more informative way than anyone can on the internet. More importantly, it will give you the confidence to cope with most situations. There are other issues when dealing with an injury such as breathing and maintaining the airway and they can be life threatening, such as with rib injuries.Health Question & Answer

You should consider whether or not you can move them - if it's a broken wrist, it's probably safe to get them into a car and take them to the hospital, but if it's something like a rib or collar bone, it's probably best to call the paramedics since moving them could make the injury worse.Health Question & Answer

Considering the nature of the break, determine whether or not the patient should be moved. If it's a lower extremity break then you'll have to leave the injured person where they fell unless they are in the middle of a street and at risk for further injury. If it's an upper extremity break like a finger or a wrist or ever forearm it shouldn't put too much pressure on the affected area to carefully move the patient to a location where it can be cared for. Otherwise just call the squad so they can take care of it.Health Question & Answer

Do not put any pressure on it. Get them to the hospital as soon as possible. If you need to move them much, you could make a splint to immobilize the bone.Health Question & Answer

Don't put any pressure on it and call a doctor/emergencyHealth Question & Answer
