This could be a few things. If you've only had it for a short while though, and it's due to trauma, hopefully they will go back to normal in the end. A few possiblities that spring to mind...

Some people get various kinds of anterior knee pain due to problems in the knee cap and its associated tendons, such as 'patellofemoral syndrome' or 'chondromalacia'. This can affect young people. These types of problems can be tricky to diagnose, but can often be treated by a physiotherapist. Often pain will have gone on for a long time and occur with exercise. Anti-inflammatories will help in the short term.

If there is a lot of swelling, it could also be 'housemaid's knee', or pre-patellar bursitis. This is often red as well as swollen. There is a fluid filled sac in front of your knee cap that acts as a cushion. Normally it is flat and you can't feel it. If it becomes inflamed due to friction/trauma (e.g. working while kneeling, as housemaids used to do) then it can swell up and fill with fluid. It would need a doctor or physio to look at it to be sure. Often this will go away by itself, but it can also be injected with steroids. Anti-inflammatories, such as Ibuprofen, will help.

There is an excellent website with information about knee pain here:

Perhaps you can use any of the following items to kneel on:

folded cardboard (from discarded boxes)
styrofoam pieces (size of sliced bread, carried around in your pocket)
rolled-up hand towel
sport's knee pads
rubber mat
foldednewspaper

Use something to cushion the pressure and to keep the cold floor from continuous close contact to bones --- that is the aim!
Better luck with the knees in future.Health Question & Answer

You're young and time can ease you knee pain. By the way, it might be superficial or more serious. If I were you, I'd see a doctor to make sure that you don't have any permanent damage. Good luck and take care!Health Question & Answer

Well, my dad has bad knees, and something that helped him was losing any excess weight you have.

Less weight = less weight for your knees to deal with.

Maybe you should go to the doctor.?

Good luck ! :)Health Question & Answer

I had a similar problem as a gardener years ago, through kneeling on cold ground.
They will improve in time, but some of the damage is probably permanent.
