Whats the nhs helpline for non emergencies (like a general health question)?!

Question: Whats the nhs helpline for non emergencies (like a general health question).?
I remember being given a number that I could call (a 24 hour number) incase something "odd" happened with my (or someone elses) health.

I have the NHS helpline, but when I rang it up the automated message said its only for emergencies...
But im rather concerned about something and its quite late (and i'd rather speak to someone anonymously before I see my GP).
Its not an emergency as hopefully it wont kill me dead, but if I leave it, it may get worse and worse within the next year.

0845 46 47 NHS Direct.

NHS Direct operators are mostly qualified nurses armed with reference material, and their experience as a nurse. They cannot make diagnoses over the phone. They will not frighten people into thinking they have something serious. They will tell people how best to treat any injuries they may have, how to deal with any immediate medical emergency, and tell you if they think you should go to A&E, or to your GP.Health Question & Answer
