What can you do for a broken big toe?!

Question: What can you do for a broken big toe.?
I think I broke my big toe what can I do and what do you think they will do if I go to the doctor.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I just did that to mine a little over a month ago.
They took a metal bar with padding on it, then taped that to the big tow and then taped the other end near the middle of my foot down, and then there was a third row of tape that held my big tow and second toe together. And then another row of tape below that that ran all away around
You should have it xrayed - if its broken certain ways (i.e. across the top) you might never walk right on it again.

Either case - it will take 4-6 weeks for it to stabilze before you can use it without "staying off of it" as much.
Mine still hurts frequentlyHealth Question & Answer

I work in an emergency room, and see this situation often. However I am not a medical doctor and I reccomend you seek medical attention if you feel necessary. Ignoring a broken toe could lead to severe foot and back problems if left untreated. Most peoplel will tell you "there is nothing you can do for a broken toe." This is not the case. First you need to establish what kind of break, (if any) there is. You could have broken your toe, fractured it, or just sprained it. This could be determined with a simple xray. If you have broken it in a place that it appears that it will heal normally (the very tip) then they will most likey "buddy splint" this means splinting or wrapping your toe with the toe next to it, to provide support and correct positioning. If you have broken your toe so much that you have broken the "tarsals" the long bone on top of your foot, then this could require surgery. If you think you have a broken toe you should seek medical attention, some things you could do approx 1-2 hrs after the trauma, look for swelling that doubles in size, acute tenderness and pain at the top of the foot. also, when possible, 1-2 hours after take your temperature anything over 99 degrees F, will indicate the bodys reaction to inflammation, and you have most likely broken the toe. During healing time wear a very firm, flat soled shoe, open toe (sandals, not flip flops with the thong that would be too painful if this is in regard to your big toe) this will allow for adequate healing in the right position. Most important, seek medical attention, stay off of it when possible for a couple of weeks, for the pain I would say take anti-infammatory pain relievers such as motrin, or ibuprofen. The doctor has little to offer to relieve metatarsal stress fractures. You can get crutches at the drug store. Casts are to be avoided if at all possible, and surgery is virtually never done. A walking cast for an incredibly painful foot is about the only thing the doctor can do that you can't. And good luck.Health Question & Answer

my mom broke her big toe once. there's not much you can do. it's too small for a cast lol. try to stay off it for a while and try not to bump it at all (don't kick anything) you can make a little splint if you want but its kinda more hassle than anythingHealth Question & Answer

I wouldnt do anything, just rest it and dont use it too much, I broke my finger yesterday but theres no way Im goin to the doc, too much trouble for just a finger, not that big of a deal. Stay off that foot for a whileHealth Question & Answer

There isn't really anything they can do for it. Just re-align it if it is out of place (which is painful). Stay off of it. Just don't self medicate with alcohol like I did (LOL) then I had a broken toe and the worst hangover ever!!Health Question & Answer

my dad broke his toe before, he went to the doctors and they didn't do anything about it, just told him to stay off it, and take pain killers if it starts hurting. hope it gets better soon.

you just wrap it with some of that mini bandage tape and soon the pain goes away and it may be healed and it may not but it still works til it does.Health Question & Answer

They really can't do anything with a broken toe. Try to wrap it with an ace bandage, elevate it when you're sitting, and wear sandals.Health Question & Answer
