Answers:
The fact that it hurts when you sneeze, makes it MORE likely to be a small hernia, because sneezing causes a sudden increase in the pressure INSIDE the abdominal cavity, which would push down on a herniated area. Hernias are MUCH less common in girls, but still occur.

Your symptoms can also be caused by swollen Inguinal lymph glands--Mono can cause generalized lymph gland swelling, especially at your age. Any swelling in your neck, or under-arms.? Any recent sore throat or fevers.?
If you have a tender swollen area, no matter what the cause, it will hurt from external pressure like certain positions of walking and sitting when the leg is bent back or skin is stretched over the lump.

You need to have it checked out. Swollen lymph glands can be a sign of infection or illness. Mono causes your spleen to get swollen as well (you cannot play soccer with a swollen spleen--sudden impact could cause rupture of it.) If it is a hernia; does the swelling go away when you lie down flat and very gently push the lump up towards your abdomen.? If NOT, it could be an "entrapped" hernia. If this gets MORE swollen, it could cut off the blood supply and become "strangulated"--which is a painful emergency like appendicitis!Health Question & Answer
