I dont think that the doctors are taking my injury seriously...?!

Question: I dont think that the doctors are taking my injury seriously....?
about 2 weeks ago I was skating and I noticed an annoying, yet bearable pain just above my outside right ancle, I continued to practice and afterwards it pretty much went away, but then at hockey practice, then at soccer practice I noticed it again but still didn't say much until about 5 days after i first noticed the pain when my dad made me a doctors appointment. The doctor just asked me where it hurt but didn't even touch it to see where it was tender etc. He told me I probably strained a muscle on that side of my leg and I went home. it continued to get worse and soon I could only skate for about 20 minutes before the pain got to be unbearable, we tried to make another doctors appointment but it was booked untill another week ontop of the week that had already passed since my last doctors appointment, so we went into the emergency room. The nuse looked at it and said she thaught it was a stress fracture, but when the doctor arrived he said it was either tendonitis or shin splints. I went home again. That was about 3 days ago and since then the pain has changed. I can locate the specific origin of the pain within my leg but it also hurts to bend my ancle up, or turn it to the sides. I am also having trouble bearing much weight on it now. It seems like it just keeps getting worse and the generalized pain has turned into a sharp pain. I am wondering if I may have a stress fracture or something else, but it seems like the doctors arent taking it seriously because I can walk with just a slight limp most of the time and I look fine, theres also very little swelling most of the time.

i looked it up on the internet and I do not believe I have shin splints or tendonitis, but a stress fracture seems very likely. i know that it cannot be seen in an x-ray untill it starts to heal and that a bone scan would be needed, and even then it is usually just rest for up to 8 weeks for it to heal... I dont have 8 weeks, I just started playing hockey and I have power skating lessons for the next 10 weeks as well as games and practices. Ontop of that i have basketball season starting soon and I have a twice a week plyometrics class, and twicw a week public skating to practice for hockey and power skating. I dont know what to do and i just want to get better. if I just try to work through it for my skating at least will it make it worse.? Can a stress fracture turn into a real fracture.? how can I treat a stress fracture or whatever this may be at home.? how do i make the doctors listen to me.? I am really frusterated, please help...Health Question & Answer

i work for the medical field. when you walk into the office you need to make it sound worse then what it is. you tell the doc that he is working for you and that he needs to check it out. if it is a stress fracture you need to stay off of it for about two to three days. ice it every morning and every night for 15 min. then put heat on it for 15 min. the more you walk around on it the worse it could get. go back to the doc. tell him its hurts bad its not getting better and that he needs to fix it. remember you pay him to help you. so you are the boss. hope that helps.Health Question & Answer

I know how you feel! I've been left to walk around on a broken and torn ankle before. If you are still in pain I would suggest going back to the doctors and make sure you get an x-ray and a bone scan so they can suggest to you proper treatment. Working through it will absolutely make it worse! You can end up with a very-serious life-long injury if you do nothing. If it is a stress fracture, you can probably make it through without a full cast, mabee an air cast or something removable that can be worn during sports. But the best thing to do would be to go to emergency, complain alot about the pain so you get an x-ray, and get a proper diagnosis.Health Question & Answer

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your doctors. The emergency room doctors are frequently tied up with life threatening emergencies such as heart attacks, stokes, head injuries etc. and somebody with ankle pain that is not critical may get rushed through. Go see an orthopedic doctor. They specialize in muscles, bones and joint injuries. They will tell you what is going on and how to treat it. They will listen to you because problems like this are what they specialize in and enjoy working with. Health Question & Answer
