I guess I slept the wrong way last night and my neck has been hurting me all day. Whenever I move it hurts. Like there is knots or something.

What can I do make the pain stop.?

Any kind of neck rubs I can do.?

Answers:
Neck pain in the morning may be due to poor sleeping habits. Sleep on a firm surface: a firm mattress is best; a bed board will make a soft mattress firmer. Stop using a pillow, or use special pillows that that keep the head from twisting without raising it.
Warmth may be of benefit in relieving spasms and pain. Heat may be applied with hot showers, hot compresses, or heating pad. Heat may be used as often as practical, but don't burn the skin. Aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen will help relieve pain and inflammation.
Neck pain, like back pain, is slow to improve and may take several weeks to completely resolve. If pain doesn't lessen in a week, call the doctor. And good luck.Health Question & Answer

It is probably a muscle strain. There is a chance of a herniated or bulging cervival disc, but it's likely a strain if you haven't had this problem for frequently or for a long time. A muscle strain usually will get better on its own within one to three weeks, but you should be careful because it can have a snowball-like effect - the pain you feel can cause your muscle to tense up more, squeezing your vertebre together, causing your disc to bulge towards your central nerve, causing more pain, causing your muscle to tense up more, etc.

So, the solution - first you will need an anti-inflmmatory medication (3 or 4 advil should do the trick). Then you will need heat to relax the muscle (a warm moist towel or bath should be fine - the warmest you can safely tolerate) and (later) cold to reduce the pain. You want to alternate between these, as needed. When the muscle is relaxed, you want to try to stretch it to get rid of the pain - do this very carefully to avoid injuring it worse. The advil plus heat/stretching should cause a significant improvement reasonably soon.

If it doesn't get better within a few days to a week, you should see a physician. Your options at this point may include: a muscle relaxant and/or pain medication, a medical massage to work out any knots in your muscles (I believe a "pressure-point massage" helps here), physical therapy, which may include neck traction (stretching the neck by pulling the head away from the body). It is very important that you don't attempt these last options on your own - you can purchase over-the-door neck traction devices, for instance, but they can cause serious injuries if improperly used.

I am not a physician, only a person with 2 herniated discs. Please confirm this advice before employing it. What I found to be helpful was to learn about the anatomy of the spine - it helps to understand the intuition behind the potential treatments.

Good luck!
