Why are most caregivers (cna's) mean to the residents and other workers?!
Question: Why are most caregivers (cna's) mean to the residents and other workers.?
I am a cna. Haven't been in the field long. I am finding out that most of the caregivers are stressed out and mean to the residents. I can look over the fact that they are mean to me as well but i feel sorry for the elderly and disabled and try to make their life as good as I can because they are like imprisoned and have given up everything. If you relatives out there knew how some facilities treat your loved ones you would of never taken them. I am talking about the nicer facilities also.Health Question & Answer

I worked in a nursing home when I was 20 years old. I saw this kind of thing going on while I was at work too. Most people that are mean etc., just think of their being at work as a job. They don't care about the people they are abusing, they just want to get it done and get out. I would stay after hours and play the piano for them and one lady I would put her make up on for her. And some of the bedridden patients just needed to be talked to, they are all so lonely.Health Question & Answer
That hasn't been the situation I have seen in my 16 years as a nurse. I have come across many wonderful and caring CNA's.
If you witness anyone being mean to the residents, as a front line worker (and caring person) it is your responsibility to report such abuse.
There should be a number you can call and report to the State Board of Nursing, or State Health and Human Services. Some facilities have anonymous numbers you can call also.

I worked as a CNA and loved it until an accident that ended my "career" I also saw some that were down right rude and hateful to some of the residents. I reported some of the ones I worked with to the DON. They were "talked" to and it did no good, so I called state. That was right before my accident so I dint know what happened. It is you responsibility to report abuse or neglect. Those that are mean to the residents give the caring ones a bad name. I wish you luck and hope you continue in the field as you sound like you care.Health Question & Answer
