What could be the cause of my wrist problems?!

Question: What could be the cause of my wrist problems.?
I've been having problems for a few months now with my left wrist. IT is my dominant hand. I work as a cook, so I do a lot of prep work, repetitious movement and cutting of vegetables and so forth. The last couple weeks though, it's been a lot worse. Throbbing pain all the time, and when I try to pick things up to hand them to someone, (with my thumb on top and the rest of my hand holding from underneath) it feels like something's come loose (I actually feel a snap in the base of my thumb) and I can't control my thumb to keep a grip on anything. Any ideas as to what is causing this.? It seems to be affecting mostly my thumb and the side of my wrist closest to it. I'm concerned mostly because I'm a musician as well, been playing piano for 16 years, percussion for ten as well as many other instruments. I don't want this to affect my music.Health Question & Answer

I know exactly what you have, and it is always mistaken for carpal tunnel.

What you have is called De Quervains Tensynovitis. You can do a google search about it. There's a test you can do yourself to confirm the diagnoses. However, I get this and can tell from your symptoms this is indeed what you have. The snapping you feel is the tendon catching.

For now, go the drugstore or medical supply store and get a wrist splint. Make sure it has a thumb immobilizer too. You can ice it if there is swelling, and take an anti-inflammitory. Because this is an over use injury, resting it is the only way to get it better. It will take 4-6 weeks to improve.Health Question & Answer
