Is sleeping next to a computer monitor bad for you?!

Question: Is sleeping next to a computer monitor bad for you.?
At night I sleep next to 2 computers which have turned on monitors because I frequently download something, defragment my disk etc.

I wonder if this has a negative effect on my health.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Why not turn the monitors off.? If you are downloading or defragmenting and not using the system, they don't need to be turned on. That will alleviate any health concerns you have, as well as save money on your electric bill.

If for some reason you don't want to turn them off....

Are they flat panel LCDs.? If so, there is probably virtually no risk at all.

From CRTs, there is a very small risk of some x-ray exposure from the cathode ray tube. The tubes are heavily shielded though, and normally block most x-rays. But there is a very small amount that do make it past the shielding. There is also EMF exposure from the high voltage power supplies and such.

How close is close.? Even 3 or 4 feet greatly reduces any exposure that might otherwise occur.Health Question & Answer

The safest place to be (surprise) is in *front* of the monitors. Behind or to the side, you will be exposed to EMF. Metal shields can be purchased that go around the back of the monitor, but I do not know their effectiveness.

As to the effects of EMF -- there have been contradictory studies but it certainly isn't something we evolved to deal with, so the precautionary principle is wise.

(And if you are referring to LCD monitors, I don't think it's an issue.)Health Question & Answer
