I was prone to ear infection when I was a kid and my great grandmother used to give me this old remedy for the pain. She used to take a cotton swab and dab the end of it in vicks and heat it up with a lighter so it was real warm and stuff it in my ear and just leave it in there for a while. Some times for hours because once the pain went away which was usually almost instantly after the cotton was inserted the swab would keep the air out and usually long as the air stayed out for awhile the pain wouldnt come back. She never left it in over 4 hours or so though. Mind you I am 40 years old and this was when I was about 2 all the way up to 10 so it was awhile ago. But hey it worked for me kiddo so hope you try it......Good luckHealth Question & Answer

Any kind of NSAID should give some relief. Advil, Aleve, or any of the generics. (Tylenol is not an anti inflammatory, so it could possibly help w/ the pain, but not the SOURCE of the pain) also, do you have a heating pad.?.? You can lay the affected ear on the pad at med-hi temperature, it really helps.

**Both the NSAID and the heat together would be the best solution!!**

also, 800 mg of ibuprofen (advil) or 600 mg of naproxen sodium (aleve) are both meant to last 8 hours, so it should help during class.

I hope you start feeling better!! I know ear infections are painful.

Hey, I just read on WEBMD.COM that sometimes a decongestant is helpful for ear ache pain.Health Question & Answer

Warm olive oil on a cotton swab does help, but it sounds like your first infection has not responded to the medication. You may have a secondary infection and you will need something stronger for the infection and the pain.Health Question & Answer
