Food servers at hospitals?!

Question: Food servers at hospitals.?
As a food server at hospitals, part of the job is to also wash the dishes. The trays coming from isolation rooms are wrapped in plastic garbage bags. The kitchen worker then tears open the bag and gets the dishes ready for the dishwashing machine. So the germs from the patient in isolation have had time to multiply while in the wrapped garbage bag, then the kitchen worker gets to breathe in all those lovely germs. Would a doctor or nurse also do this, or would they take precautions such as wearing a mask.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Forget the food service manager, this is outside their area of expertise. Make an appointment with the person in charge of infection control and express in detail your concerns. If that does not resolve the issue, do a little research and contact the State Board of Hospitals, or the "Joint commission". This is not an issue you should take lightly under any circumstance. You have legitimate concerns. Health Question & Answer

your are quite right to be concerned.?and why the plastic bags.?as yes the germs will multiply and this would concern me discuss this with your manager, and yes I would insist on wearing a mask as when you open the bag the germs that are accumulating will go straight for you and you are breathing all that in.?who knows there are so many bugs and super bugs everywhere and check your protocol's as hospitals are being focused on all over the world.?also Daisy good for you and everyone plays a part in hospitals and your job is just as important as anyone else as if dishes and kitchens are not clean and up to a high standard then more germs will accumulate take care and get this checked out .?so as you can breathe easy take careHealth Question & Answer

I don't think the Dr would wear a mask, they see all kinds of sick people. Some nurses would wear a mask, it all depends on how seriously ill the patient is. Germs die pretty quickly and unless you are actually touching their bodily fluids it is hard to catch most germs. If it worries you ask your supervisor if you can wear a mask when doing the trays.Health Question & Answer

It should be absolutely mandatory for ALL Food Servers in ALL hospitals to wear Masks, rubber gloves and head gear when working with utensils and plates and other kitchenware from Isolation Rooms and Surgery Units.Health Question & Answer

I am a nurse and work with isolation patients every day. Most germs are not airborne, which would require a mask. The use of gloves are sufficient. Health Question & Answer
