Most HMOs assign you a doctor and a hospital and tell you that if you want a specialist, the doctor they assigned you has to make all the arrangements. They also decide which medications you will take and whether you need treatment or not.
It is not the doctor's decision as to whether to treat you with ointment A or ointment B. It is the HMO telling the doctor that you will be treated with salve C which really doesn't work at all.
The hospital assigned may be over a hundred miles from where you live and you may have to pass 3 other better hospitals. You have absolutely no choice of doctor or hospital.
It is good for those who cannot afford the better coverage, but bad as a committee makes the decisions about your care, not a personal doctor or yourself.
