I was in a car accident 3 days ago, I may have injured my ribs. Is it necessary to see a doctor?!

Question: I was in a car accident 3 days ago, I may have injured my ribs. Is it necessary to see a doctor.?
I was the passenger in a two car accident. Our car was T-boned on my side. At the time of the accident I wasn't in much pain, mostly shock for my first accident, and I declined medical attention. I don't want to cause any more problems for my driver because I know he is dealing with enuf at the moment. I think I may have injured my ribs because there is a external bruise and it hurts to laugh, cough, ect. Some have told me to seek medical attention while others agree that its not really necessary since they can't do anything for the ribs anyway. I would rather not because I don't want to cause my friend any more grief.Health Question & Answer

Well, while the doctors can't do much for broken ribs, they CAN give you pain relief options that are safe. I understand that you don't want to cause your friend any more grief, and that is sweet of you. But which would you rather have.? Getting relief now from a doctor or constantly suffering from the pain of your ribs, which would make your friend feel bad in the long run.? At least if you got treated now, you would feel better and you could focus on helping your friend with his issues going on. Health Question & Answer

Visit a doctor ASAP...

Any ambulance officer can tell you that most injuries from car accidents happen after the accident not before.

If in an accident, dont move until treated by a qualified person... if you really do move, then visit a doctor as soon as possible to check for any damage... especially spinal problems.Health Question & Answer

yes always

i was in a car accident a few months back and i went to phsyical therapy and it has helped tremendously. and i have friernds who were in car accidents and refused to seek medical assistance and later in their life, the injury affected them a great dealHealth Question & Answer

it is not you friend who is responsible if you were t boned. your friend is responsible only if they are the cause of the accident. my question if your friend receives compensation for the car that was driven, then shouldn't your injury should be reported and treated as well.?Health Question & Answer

You should definitely seek medical attention. There could be something wrong internally that you can't see without an x-ray.
Definitely get a checkup, just to be safe.

Go for yourself; it's not necessary to tell your friend if you aren't comfortable doing so.Health Question & Answer

You don't have to tell your friend/the driver but you do have to go to the doctor.

While they generally don't do anything about broken ribs they can and will do something if the rib has damaged something else.

If you are in a car accident you need to have a medical check even if you don't think anything has happened. Car crashes have a habit of doing internal damage that may not be discovered until some time after the accident.

I don't want to frighten you but i think i need to tell you a bad case story. My partner was in a car crash a few years ago in a similar situation to yours however he was thrown from the vehicle. Being tough he only complained about a sore shoulder so when the medical team looked at him they said he had a broken collarbone and sent him on his way. A day later he noticed a bruise on his side and suspected a broken rib, thinking the same way you did about ribs not requiring treatment he sucked up the pain and went on with his life. Long story short he got really sick. The broken rib was rubbing on his internal organs and causing them to swell. They swelled so much that his spleen exploded and he had to have emergency surgery and almost died. He now has a lot of digestive issues due to damage but he is alive. He spent almost a month in intensive care just because he thought a broken rib meant nothing.

So in short a doctor can make sure everything is ok and it's just a broken rib. If something bad happened because you were too afraid to tell a doctor because of what your friend was going through, how do you think your friend would feel later.

Get yourself checked, if it's nothing then nobody needs to know you ever went however if there IS something wrong it may save your life.

Good luck.Health Question & Answer
