Anyone know much about severed tendons in your hand?!

Question: Anyone know much about severed tendons in your hand.?
Clever me. I stuck a kitchen knife through the palm of my hand this morning, about 1/3 down from my index finger slightly in towards the palm of my hand. There was lots of blood and yellowy fatty bits and general queasiness. Now it's all cleaned up but aching something rotten and I can't seem to move the tip of my finger.
Have I severed a tendon.? If so, is it possible that it can heal on its own, or is surgery really required to knit tendons back together again.?
Thanks!Health Question & Answer

First of all...you need stitches. The yellow fatty bits are your layer of fat just under the skin. When you get a cut deep enough to let that 'stuff' pop out you need to be stitched up.

Second...there is a possibility that you severed a tendon. You would notice that you are not able to move one of your fingers or hand (in general) very much.

The pain you are experiencing is probably normal for the injury. The increase in pain could mean infection is setting in because your wound is not stiched.

Please go to the ER! Despite what others have said you would need surgery to repair the tendon, if you did indeed cut one. The tendon cannot heal unless it is attached to bone or an appropriate muscle. Only a surgeon can do that. The tendon will not just attach itself to the right spot. :)Health Question & Answer

It seems improbable that you severed a tendon, your inability to move the tip of your finger may be due to something else. All the same, the investment in seeing a doctor could be worth it. A severed tendon would withdraw up inside your hand (the muscles are under tension) and would not knit back together on its own.Health Question & Answer

You will need to see a hand or plastic surgeon. The hand is a very special part of the body. Bones and tendons very close together. You should have the wound checked by a doctor and an X-ray as well as some antibiotics as infection from a knife can be very serious. Scar tissue left behind can often cause serious implications for use of your fingers later on. Health Question & Answer

I think you should get to A and E asap! you need to have an xray done to see if you have damaged any of your bones. also they will be able to tell you the damage you have done to any tendons/muscles etc and to check there is no infection from the wound. It seems silly but you should go to be on the safe side!
good luck hope you are ok.

Hey.

My dad suffered a similar accident - a glass milk bottle smashed in his hand as he picked it up.

Like you he couldn't move the tip of his finger. He had an operation but still hasn't regained the movement in the tip of his finger.

My advice is get to hospital asap.

The Quicker the Better!

Good Luck
