Answers:
1. Hangnails you can just trim. Ingrown nails, if severe, need a doctor to remove. If it's minor you can treat it at home. Instructions for that can be found here: http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-t...
2. It hurts more because you have an infection. Probably, anyway. Improperly removing hangnails leads to paronychia (nail infection) about 95% of the time. Is your finger swollen at all.? If it is, that's because there's pus trapped under or around your nail. Soak your finger in warm water with Epsom salts. That will draw out the infection and help with the pain. After you soak it, put an antibacterial cream on it and bandage.
3. Yes, get a pair of nail clippers or nail scissors and trim it. Pulling it or biting it hurts, can pull of extra skin, and makes paronychia more likely.Health Question & Answer

Removing the hangnail caused a small, internal injury near the nail bed, which can result in deep, throbbing pain. Whenever I remove hangnails from my big toe, it feels like the BONE is throbbing. In time, the pain will subside; until it does, take some aspirin (or Tylenol if you've got a sensitive stomach) and apply warm compresses for ten minutes, followed by cold compresses for ten minutes. Sleep with your hand elevated.

If you PULL a hangnail out, it will always hurt because you are tearing out part of the nail bed. To remove a hangnail painlessly, CLIP it off using nailclippers as close to its base as you can. A tiny piece may still be there, but just ignore it until it's long enough to clip off. Ripping it out will injure your finger.Health Question & Answer
