I'm scared to go to the chiropractor?!

Question: I'm scared to go to the chiropractor.?
This might sound silly, but I'm scared to go to the chiropractor! I'm about to leave this morning. Like, they crack things into place, and I know they are professionals, but what if he accidentally breaks my neck!.? :( (it's happened before probably) I know you're supposed to not be tense, but that's hard for me. And I'm one of those people where the 'what if' actually happens to me! Any advice.? (like thoughts or w/e that will help me not be scared)Health Question & Answer

I am a chiropractic intern ( I graduate in 3 weeks). I want to truly tell you the risks and benefits of chiropractic.

1st Are there risks.? Absolutely. So what are they.?

1) First to alleviate your fear of a chiropractor "breaking your neck". In the 110 years of chiropractic there has NEVER been a broken neck. In order to break your neck, you need to turn your head beyond its normal range of motion. If you rotate your head to the left or right- you will have between 60-90 degreess of motion. It would need to be taken past that point. All Chiropractic neck adjustments happen between 5-40 degrees. It gets nowhere close to going outside your normal range of motion.
2) Another responder mentioned stroke. Yes this is a risk. It is really the only serious side effect that is associated with chiropractors. So what are the true risks of a stroke from a chiropractic adjustment.? Here are the statistics along with other risk factors you face every day(rounded to the nearest thousand).
Risk of dying in a car accident 1 in 19000
Risks of being attacked by a dog: 1 in 132,000
Risks of dying from properly prescribed or over the counter medication : 1 in 32,000
Odds of dying in a plane accident 1 in 354,000
Odds of getting struck by lighting 1 in 576,000
Odds of getting bitten by a shark 1 in 700,000
Odds of a stroke from a chiropractor 1 in 3 million
Odds of dying from a chiropractic adjustment (as the result of a stroke) 1 in 15 million

As you can see, many things have much more serious risks than a chiropractic adjustment.

I am truly sorry about the gentleman who had the stroke, but it is not an ordinary occurence.

As for the benefits,
1) Re-alignes your spine which relieves muscle tension.
2) Helps nerve supply to different parts of the body
3) Relieves pain
4) Helps restore normal function to the body

I wish you the best on your appointment. I am sure it will help you.

However, let me also give you a heads up. Many times after a first adjustment, a patient will feel muscular pain. it is a pain like working out at the gym. This is because the muscles have gotten used to being in a improper position for so long. With the adjustment, they are forced back into the proper position, but they are not used to it so they will be a little tender ( for some people). But this will usually go away within 24 hrs.

Please let me know how it went. My e-mail is in my contact information. Health Question & Answer

I don't mean to scare you more but you should be concerned. Make an appointment with your doctor or an orthopedic specialist. My advice is to avoid the chiropractor as they can do more harm than good!

Chiropractors have to believe that everything causes conditions that only they can fix so they can convince patients that we can't live comfortably without visits twice per week.

I had a stroke last year as a result of chiropractic treatment and have since made it a priority to raise awareness of the dangers of chiropractic care. Please visit this website to read my story and similar ones of other victims so you may be aware of the risks and make an informed decision about treatment.Health Question & Answer

i used to work at a chiropractic office.
telll the dr you are nervous. he or she will 'take it easy' on you the first time. they can just do a few simple things to build your confedence in the procedures. dont be nervous, it is an awsome thing. it will take a while i am super nervous about my back neck stuff too because i was in a major car accident a couple years back, and chiropractors work better when your not tense so your muscles are relaxed but it will take a while for your body to 'trust' the dr. its normal just tell the dr. :)Health Question & Answer

I do martial arts and have to go there to get my neck and back cracked at least once a month.
If your scared your scared i guess but i will say this.
just RELAX!
Like the moment b4 he cracks things go somewhere else in your mind and completely relax because if your not relaxed I beleive it doesn't quite work as well, as your kind of unintentionally resisting his manipulation.
Just go with it!Health Question & Answer

Don't be scared. Chiropractor is the most safest way. They don't use any meds to make you feel better. all they do is adjust your back bones. Trust me I've been to one and nothing happens to me. Chiropractic help improve your health and well being.Health Question & Answer

I was the same way. Its scary. But they can't just snap your neck. They are trained and they are there to get you back into shape. My back is back in order and pain free thank goodness!!!! Health Question & Answer
