Is it broken... How can you tell?!

Question: Is it broken... How can you tell.?
okay, so i was exercising, right.? and i had 10 pound weights on my ankles, okay.? I was bare foot, don't ask me why. All of the sudden, I tripped over my big toe, and fell! It was so painful, I couldn't breath! So, I hopped over to a chair, took off the weights, and looked at it. it was all red, and starting to swell, so i put ice on it. after a while, I looked at my toe, and it was about, 1/2 cm bigger than usual around thermonucleare of the big toe, and had a slight blueish tone. i didn't go to the doctor because I didn't think it wasnecessaryy. this happened yesterday, okay... i woke up this morning, and the swelling went down, but it is still there, and my toe is still blueish looking, with a little bit of black. i can't walk on it well, and it hurts to flex and point, but at least I can today. do you think i fractured a little bone in my toe.? help! Answers:
A fracture can show signs of swelling, discoloration, and pain which you have. You won't know for sure if you broke your toe or not unless you get an x-ray. When my daughter fell on her arm she didn't have any signs of it being broken but the x-ray showed it broke in two places. The only way to know for sure if it's fractured is to get an x-ray. Don't be surprised if you get a cast all the way up to the middle of your leg. Sometimes kids injure themselves and have a lot of pain. The dr. is sometimes not sure after seeing an x-ray because there could be something going on with the growth plate. One dr. told me the only way to know if she fractured her wrist was after an x-ray in 4 weeks after the cast came off. She just sprained it but the treatment for a sprain or fracture was to splint it in a cast. So just in case if it's not broken the treatment will be the same for you. You may get to pick your favorite color cast and will most likey have to either be in a walking cast or use crutches depending on the treatment. You can go to an urgent care center if you don't want to go to the E.R. and then you can follow up with an orthopedic dr. My grandmother broke three of her toes and she said it hurt so much and they didn't heal right and they became all deformed after a period of time.

Some may have said to wrap it up and put ice on it. Ice is a good thing for now to get the swelling down till you get in to see a dr. in the office, urgent care center, or E.R. If you walk on it and do have a fracture you could do more damage. My husband broke his ankle after falling off a tank. Some people require surgery for a fracture or they need a splint, ordered to stay off of it ie. crutches, or they will do more harm if they do the wrong thing. If you are aloud take some Advil or Tyelonol and if it's to painful for that the dr. can prescribe a pain killer to help. If you get it splinted or casted usually the pain gets less after the fracture is stabilized. Good luck and always be safe by getting it checked out then sorry and suffer longer than you have. Since you can't walk on it that is a sign that you did something to it. Pain is a symptom of something gone wrong.

Some have said there is nothing that can be done but since it is the BIG TOE and it can make the rest of the foot move (when someone breaks a thumb a cast is put on up to the middle of the arm) you may require a cast or splint. Let the professionals deal with it. Some can splint it to much causing the blood to not circulate. Better safe than sorry. Traction is normally used for the femur bone but I've seen devices in the orthopedic dr's office that can pull traction on fingers the proper way-never seen them for toes.

Get a medical professional if you want some pain relief meds and proper splinting. You don't need 911 or an ambulance. If it's your right toe try and get someone to take you to an urgent care center, e.r., or dr's office if you can't stand the pain.Health Question & Answer

It sounds like it. There is not a lot you can do for it except treat the symptoms. Ice, elevation, over the counter pain medicationss. If your job requires prolonged standing or walking than go to the dr. He can give you best diagnosis for it. If needed he can prescibe speclial shoe or walking shoe, he might be able to splint it. But for the most part there is not much you can do. There is one thing you can do, though. Remember, you will probably do that again sometime in your life.Health Question & Answer

You probably did. I remember when my friends dad jumped on his boat from the dock and hit the little ladder. It hurt him and he couldn't walk on it either. He thought it was nothing but when he went to the hospital they told him that it was broken. His toe was also a bluish- blackish tone. If I were you I would go to the doctor for them to check it out. You know... Just in case.Health Question & Answer

The exact same thing happen to me just in a diffrent way my big toe turned blue and everything..

if you can move it its not broken i suggest you rape it up real good and tight and make sure to move it.. (that's if your not going to a docter)

And some advice don't let it snag on carpet like mine does it bends all over again and you back to the begining.Health Question & Answer

Could be dislocated , Sprained or broken nothing they can do other than an x-ray and there is nothing they will do about it anyway except tell you to rest it & strap it to the toe next to it.Health Question & Answer

You might wanna get it checked out now. It's better do get it over with now before it gets any worse. Don't want to fall down the stairs or anything now. Health Question & Answer

why the hell do idiot kids jump online for medical advice when they should instead go to a doctor or emergency room.?

The only way to be sure if it's broken or not (apart from cutting into it and looking) is to get an X-ray made and analysed.

Better safe than sorry. Leaving it untreated (even if it's not broken but seriously dislocated for example) can lead to permanent damage and leave you crippled for life.
And that's not fun, believe me.

If your parents don't believe you because you're normally a whining little cretin and now suddenly decided you have pain only a day later (perhaps on a day you're supposed to do something you don't want to do, like clean up your room.?), tough luck, you're getting what you deserve.

OK everyone...stop panicking! More than likely you hyper extended it, stretched some ligaments and tore a few blood vessels (hence the swelling and bruising). If it IS broken, there is nothing that can be done for it anyway. Here's what you do....

Have some one gently hold your toe and slowly pull it straight out like it normally would be and hold traction on it for a few minutes...or as long as you can stand it. This will hopefully put it back into alignment. Then, take that white cloth tape and tape it to the toe next to it for support. Keep icing it down, 20 min on and 15 off. This will help with the swelling and localized pain. Take tylenol and Aleve, alternating every two hours so you are taking tylenol every 6 hrs and aleve every 6 hours only 3 hours apart from each other. This will also help with pain and swelling. You may also want to visit the pharmacy and get an orthopedic support shoe and wear that until your toe feels better.

If it does not feel better after a week or the bruising/swelling gets worse before then, get thee to a doctor for xrays.Health Question & Answer
