Let me first start off by expressing my sympathy for you, it's never easy having a best friend die, so I hope that at the very least you can find some comfort in my answer when I tell you that I am almost 100% sure that algae would not have been responsible for your friends death.

The reason being that there is no algae that I know of that is poisonous. In fact algae can be extremely nutritious. Remember that all algae really is, are plants that grow in the ocean. For some reason people find the word algae to be synonomous with fungi, but that is not the case at all.

There are many different kinds of seaweed(which is a type of algae), but generally speaking seaweeds are good sources of many vitamins including: A, B, and C. They are also rich in potassium, iron and calcium. Algae in general are used for their nutritious properties in Asia in many dishes. So algae from a nutrition standpoint wouldn't have been responsible.

However there is one interesting fact that you should consider. There are a large number of wastewater facilities that use algae instead of other more toxic chemicals to treat waste. So if they are finding large amounts of algae in the sewer pipes that could mean that there is a leak somewhere in a pipe and waste water is spilling out. The algae wouldn't cause the death, the waste water would. The algae would just be an indicator that a leak had occured somewhere.

I will say though, that IF a leak had occured I doubt only one person would have become ill from it, it would have affected a large number of people. So you should wait until an autopsy is done before jumping to any conclusions. Anyway I hope this helps, and if there is anything else I can do for you please feel free to email me: onyx234@yahoo.comHealth Question & Answer

That is a hard question, I would look up information on the internet about algae.Health Question & Answer
