i would rate it a 1. tell the nurse you are scared, and they can do it carefully so it wont hurt. if you get someone good who can do it quickly, it just feels like a little pinch. (less than an intromuscular injection or most shots.)Health Question & Answer

The IVs they use these days don't really hurt much. When they put it in it feels exactly like getting blood drawn, nothing more, IF you feel it at all. Then they remove the metal needle and tape down the tube that remains in your arm/hand. These days all that remains is a very thin flexible plastic tube, so you have a lot more range of motion than you used to on the old style IVs.

Once it's in most of the time there is no discomfort at all. I say most of the time because there are some medications that cause discomfort, but not many. If you feel pain or discomfort, tell the nurse immediately. The one time I had pain it was because the girl putting it in made a mistake and went right through the vein to the other side of it, so the meds weren't making it into my blood, but were going into the muscle. The nurse I told switched to the other arm and the pain went away. Health Question & Answer

The difference is that with a blood draw, the needle is removed, whereas the IV will be left in for a time. That means you'll have to find comfortable ways to position your arm. You'll notice sometimes that as you move your arm, there are little pinches that remind you it's there. But it's not horrible, and if you experience a lot of pain after it's inserted, let them know - it shouldn't be, and they may just need to relocate on the other side (unless you're having arm/hand surgery).

Good luck!

I doubt you'll have more than a 2 or 3 pain experience. Just hang in there while it's being installed and then it's not very noticeable. You just have to remember that it's connected when you get up to walk around, and that you have to deal with the IV pole. Ask for a different pole if the wheels don't roll easily! also, let the nurse know if it becomes painful later on or if swelling happens.

But here's a trick. Borrow an electric shaver if you don't have one and shave your arms a day or two before the IV will be installed. That way, when the IV has finished it's job and the tape that secures it is removed, you won't have pain from the tape pulling on your arm hair. I shaved my arms before my last surgery and it was like giving myself a present ahead of time! When the IV was removed, the tape came off with no pain at all.

I hope whatever procedure you are having will work great and that you'll be well fast.

I have had ALOT of I.V'S and am almost 48 am still afraid still like you. I had some very bad experiences when I was young. The best things to do are:
1. Insist that you want a tiny shot of lidocain FIRST.They HAVE to listen to you and give you what you want. All you feel is a slight poke and it gets a bit hot and you won't feel the I.V. needle after it numbs in a minute or 2.
2. Alot of places have a numbing spray also that they spray on before they even give you the lidocain. They spray it on and it immediately numbs the area. It's fantastic. They use it alot on smaller children.
3. When they put the I.V. in, I now don't look, turn my head the other way and it's important to take some deep breaths and RELAX.Don't tense up at all. ALL of this will make it go VERY easy and don't worry. I have had alot due to Kidney stones and nose surgeries.

They do hurt a little, but not much more than getting blood drawn. And it doesn't last after they put the needle in. Try to stay calm and remember to relax and breathe.(sometimes I turn my head away and don't look while they are putting it in, that helps me) It will not hurt but a second or two, then you will be fine. (rating on your scale- 4) Good luck!Health Question & Answer

Don't worry - I wouldn't rate it as any sorer than giving blood. Once the IV is in a vein, it doesn't hurt at all ! I wouldn't say it was very comfortable, but there isn't any actual pain - honestly! Please don't get into a state about it..I've had to have many IVs and I wouldn't tell you a lie! Good Luck with your treatment!Health Question & Answer

Well they stick you first with some lidocain to numbd the spot. Yeah it's uncomfortable and there's a lot of pressure but it's not that bad. Try not to tense up. That's when it hurts the worst.Health Question & Answer

it really doesn't hurt its just like getting a blood test i would say a 1 or a 2. Don't worry, just don't look when they are putting it in.Health Question & Answer

In a scale of 1-10 pain I would give it a 2..they are more irritating..They don't hurt any more that blood draws. It feels like a pinch then some pressure then its in..no big deal. Health Question & Answer

It depends on who was giving it. The last one I had was great, did not feel a thing. Do not be afraid to ask for the best person if you are nervous.Health Question & Answer

What is your pain tolerance what might hurt me would not hurt you and vice a versaHealth Question & Answer
