What caused my leg (calf muscle) to cramp up and have severe pain?!

Question: What caused my leg (calf muscle) to cramp up and have severe pain.?
Last night my calf muscle hurt so bad, i was writhing in agony for about 1 minute, then it quickly let up, but ever since i've had a dull pain. But while it was cramping, it thought the world was coming to an end becauase that's how much it hurt! Will it happen again.? What caused it.? Did someone inject transformer oil into my leg and fill it full of PCBs when i was asleep.? Did i get bitten by a Chupacabra or some other multi-dimensional fanged creature.?
I don't work out or run, so it's definitely not the result of exercise or injury like that.Health Question & Answer

Charlie Horse is the leg muscles responding to not enough calcium. If the bones aren't getting enough, they will take it from the muscles in order to fulfill their needs. Calcium is also necessary for healthy heart contraction. Might want to knock off the phosphates (sodas) which also deprives your bones from much needed calcium. Calcium/magnesium (nature's muscle relaxant) is a great daily nutritional supplement, and with the added Vit D, the calcium will be better absorbed. Do drink lots of milk as well.Health Question & Answer

You probably just pulled it from stretching, or laying on it the wrong way. It doesn't need too much for it to happen, just for a muscle to spasm. It happens infrequently to me and it really is very painful.
There's nothing to really alleviate the pain... they do say to try to walk on it right away and get the cramp out, but I just sit & wait it out.Health Question & Answer

I've had that a few times in the last few months - I know what you mean about the pain! I'm not certain, but I think it has something to do with you suddenly contracting the muscle after it has been relaxed for a long time. To avoid it know I try and slowly start to move my legs when I wake up - sounds silly I know but I haven't experienced it for a while!Health Question & Answer

lol
no its nothing serious...i don't know the scientific name for it but i call it a Charlie Horse. Your muscle just spasms out and its caused by dehydration of the muscle, im pretty sure that's right, to help increase your potassium. eat more bananas lol :)Health Question & Answer

hahahahahahhaha lol that happens to me all the time and my room mate said its called a charlie horse and that i get it because i don't have enough potassium in my body, so maybe eating some bananas will help :) and it'll probably happen again lolHealth Question & Answer

yeah, you need to take magnesium/potassium supplements. I have seen patients who were on demerol/morphine injections, without any relief- then their docs had their labs drawn and discovered their low magnesium levels- after a couple pills-their pain completely goes away.Health Question & Answer

I fully agree with "someone's mom". I take calcium/magnesium tablets every night after food and it certainly seems to work.Health Question & Answer

It depends: if you're young, it could be a growing pain. If not, it could be dehydration or too much walking or something like that.Health Question & Answer

Maybe you need more potassium. Eating bananas and drinking orange juice helps.Health Question & Answer
