Can you heal from a torn ACL without getting surgery?!

Question: Can you heal from a torn ACL without getting surgery.?
So i heard after you tear your ACL its doesn't repair itself on its own. Has anyone torn their acl and not gotten surgery but still were able to play sports normally after rehabbing.? Please share your stories.Health Question & Answer

if the tear is say less than half, it is possible that it will heal, but it will be weaker, and may tear completely at a later date.

full tears do not heal, they do not have the ability to as there are so many strands, and the fibres would need to line up in the correct place and remain that way while the body healed, which is just impossible! sometimes it has been known for one end of the torn ACL to join onto the PCL though, this would look complete, but would still be functionally useless, even compromising the PCL.

to get back a stable knee, generally full reconstruction is needed, as most knees even if a rehab is done, are just too loose, the knee may well give way damaging other structures. maybe worth a try though if you are unwilling to jump straight into surgery, this is quite wise so long as you knee does not give way. the surrounding muscles are strengthened, with emphasis on hamstring and quadriceps, so that they work for the ACL.

BUT, dont put your cartilage/meniscus at risk unnecessarily, these are so important!! and be aware that even if this works initially, your knee will loosen up over time without the ACL making the reconstruction necessary anyway- worth it.?.?

also,if the physio route does not work, which is likely, ACL reconstruction is a good option, it is usually very sucessful, but yes, quite hard! something like 95% + reportedly get back to their pre injury activity levels, which is pretty good! also, the ACLgraft is said to be stronger after 18 months than the native ACL, a person is then more likely to tear their opposite ACL than their reconstructed one. so yes, most people do get back to their sports.

i have had 3 ACL tears, and physio was never really an option for me as i was one of those people who could not even perform activities of daily living without my ACL giving out all the time, let alone sports.

so, try the physio route, but dont put yourself at risk, and remember it may not work and if it does, it might not last! sorry.

hope i have helped you and you make the right decision for your knee, and of course that you can get back to your sports! remember your chances of this are good with the options you have.Health Question & Answer

This is all dependent upon the degree of tear. If the tear is above fifty percent then one is going to need surgery. Less than that will depend upon what activities are normally done and if the person is willing to alter their lifestyle. That ligaments job is to hold the knee onto the tibia and keep it from moving forward. also building up the hamstrings and grastrocs will definitely improve the stabilization of the knee.Health Question & Answer

hey,

You should go get glucosamene. That stuff is the best for joints. My b/f tore his but then later on kept playing sports and ended up ripping it in half to the point where he didn't have one.

I would wear a brace. And keep it on ice if it starts swelling. After getting surgery it would be so much better though. It doesn't take hardly anytime to heal.
