Depends on the doctor. With the fragmentation in medicine today, I guess doctors suppose other specialists will check their respective organs. My internist knew I was under the care of an ophthalmologist, so he didn't check my fundi. I was disappointed. He also knew I was seeing a urologist, so he did not check my prostate. I was not disappointed.

Internists often skip a pelvic exam on females if the patient sees a gynecologist regularly.Health Question & Answer

It depends on what your insurance will cover. Generally, the more medical history you can give will help determine what tests are done. At the very least they should take blood for a cholesterol test, PSA if you're a guy over 40, Pap smear for a woman, mammogram for a woman over 40, etc. If you're worried about a specific ailment, ask questions.
It's a good idea to write your questions out in advance so you don't forget one.
also, if your doctor does an EKG - measures your heart, that's only good for your resting heart rate. If you have a family history of heart problems, ask for a stress EKG - they put you on a treadmill and push you until you can't run any more. That will usually show any heart problems that can be triggered by excess exercise.Health Question & Answer
