Anyone else have Bipolar Parents?!

Question: Anyone else have Bipolar Parents.?
My dad is bipolar II, I was born when my parents were 17-18, my dad has gone to rehab once and hospitals a few times during my childhood, my dad was a great parent until he got very depressed which was 2-3 times a year. he only once got wildy manic. Im 21 now and dont get me wrong I love him, but i do have some problems of my own because of his illness. Like abandonment issues.((Im in counseling so you dont have to tell me that lol.))

I wanted to know what others have experienced with bipolar parents.

Do you think you are "messed up" or stronger for it.?
Did they ever have to go to the hospital.?

I hear so many stories about manic-depressives being mean to there kids. I got yelled at but I dont really know if it was anymore than the average kid. Was/Were your parent(s) mean.?

This has been on my mind a lot lately!

Thank You!Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Half of my family is bipolar. My grandma, my mother, her brother, my brother and myself all suffer from some form of bipolar disorder. My mother and brother have the depressive bipolar. I have the manic bipolar. Growing up we never really talked about it until my brother and I were actually diagnosed with it. I can remember my parents used to fight a lot when I was little. Then I think my mom seeked out some help from our doctor and got on medication. They still fought once in a while, and still do. But it is not as severe as it used to be. I honestly don't feel abandoned by my parents, as they were always open about everything. I feel like my mom is my best friend. We share our feelings, my brother too, and our thoughts and how we are doing.

I am sorry that you feel this way about your father. He has his own battles to fight, as do you. It is good that you are in counseling. And remember there are others out there that care about you. You are a wonderful strong woman, and remember that.Health Question & Answer
