Looking at symptoms, I think I might have OCD - should I follow that, or am I a hypochondriac?!

Question: Looking at symptoms, I think I might have OCD - should I follow that, or am I a hypochondriac.?
I have looked at Wikipedia, and see that I have a lot of the symptoms they had mentioned, but I have been told that I've been just thinking that I have the symptoms, but not actually having them. I feel I have what is under the category of "Intrusive thoughts and fears", and a little bit of "Contamination" and "Performing tasks".

Should I follow these guidelines, and consider myself with this condition.?

Answers:
I have OCD, have overcome it, and have started a support group for kids with OCD (see ocdkidssacramento Yahoo Group) along with the help of my parents, who are both doctors. You need a clear diagnosis. If you are diagnosed with OCD, you need to seek the help of a therapist trained specifically in the treatment of OCD, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) or Cognitive Behavrioal Therapy (CBT). Go to www.ocfoundation.org to see if there is a specialist in you area. Many people have these kinds of fears. Know that you're not alone. Different phobias are often found among individuals with OCD, and ultimately it comes down to facing your fear (not practicing relaxing techniques or distracting yourself). You need Exposure and Ritual Prevention therapy, not only medicine, to get over your fears. Medicine doesn't provide you with the tools necessary to combat your OCD. You need to find a therapist in your area that practices Exposure and Response Prevention, the gold-standard treatment for OCD. If you are unable to find a specialist in your area on the OCF's list online, you can buy a self-help book. One of the best books out there is The OCD Workbook by Bruce M. Hyman and Cherry Pedrick. While therapist-assisted treatment is always preferred, you can be very successful working on your own with a self-help book if you have the proper motivation and support. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

You sound just like me I don't have OCD and I am not a hypochondriac (both are very serious illnesses) but I do have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which makes me think I have alot of problems but I am actually fine. Do some homework on GAD, and speak to your doctor.Health Question & Answer

You need to see a psychologist or psychiatrist to be evaluated and find out for sure. Only those mental health professionals can truly tell you what is wrong.Health Question & Answer

You shouldn't self diagnose. You should see a doctor and explain your symptoms. They should be able to tell you if you have OCD. If you do they may want to put you on some type of medication to help you control it.Health Question & Answer
