Effexor XR works wonders for me as anxiety goes hand-in-hand with depression and it has relieved me of both. I just wish we had identified this as being the best course of action years ago because it has made all the difference in my life and feeling of balance and happiness.Health Question & Answer

Citalopram is an anti-depressant and generally not used solely to reduce anxiety (although it is supposed to help). If you have a high level of anxiety you should be prescribed specific anti anxiety medication. Do you see a psychologist or psychiatrist.? They should be able to help you with this.

In the meantime, Valium works very well as an anti anxiety medication but obviously is very addictive if used for a period longer than about 2 weeks. You could ask your GP to prescribe it if you have odd days of anxiety but be careful to not overuse this medication.Health Question & Answer

Quick answer: Lorazepam (generic xanax or valium I forget which) has been helpful for me. It is quick acting, good for short term things, trouble sleeping, panic attacks, social anxiety, etc.

However, in the long term that drug is addictive and loses effectiveness over time. also depending on your condition SSRIs or similar drugs, like Zoloft, Effexor, Buspar, Wellbutrin, all might be worth considering. A lot of times anxiety and depression are related. So I hope you found something that helps. I know it is a frustrating condition with many of these drugs they claim take 4-6 weeks to get the effect, often having side effects worse than the disease (Paxil put me to sleep for a whole weekend). So I would suggest trying to stick with the short term drugs, and don't discount the power of exercise and social interaction in beating anxiety/depression. Regarding herbal supplements many suggest St. John's Wort, melatonin, or similar, but I've never found any benefit to them besides a possible placebo effect. But certainly take a daily vitamin and maybe have the doctor check you for deficiencies in things like iron, vitamin D, low thyroid, etc. Good luck, I hope you find something that helpsHealth Question & Answer

There are many different medications for anxiety. I take xanax 3 times a day and it relieves my anxiety. A few others ones that I know of are Klonipin, ativan, prozac (antidepressant) and seroquel.Health Question & Answer

Xanax is known to be highly addictive though people are different. I take Klonopin which is not as addictive but not as potent either. Trazodone makes me sleepy too.Health Question & Answer

Buspar worked great for me without the drowziness of all the others I'd tried. Good luck to you!Health Question & Answer
